I have tried to learn as much as I could about Greyhounds in the last several weeks. I knew that there were Rescue Societies to help save Greyhounds who have been retired from racing, but did not realize how much these people do and how dedicated they are to this cause. They take greyhounds into their homes for foster care until they can find good homes. The people I have worked with to get Berta are extraordinary. They truly want the adoption to be successful and care deeply about every dog. They answered all my questions and eased my anxiety about providing a good home for such a special dog. |
In the past week Berta and I have explored neighborhoods I didn't even
know existed. She loves to walk and the evenings have been beautiful for
long treks around the area. Of course some residents at The Glen and The
Terrace have met Berta and have been very supportive of my adoption. In
fact several residents were at the Expo when I met Berta and strongly encouraged
me to adopt her. I am planning to take her to classes to become a certified therapy dog. She and I can then visit area nursing homes and share her gentle spirit. Interesting Trivia on Greyhounds: * Greyhounds are the only canine * mentioned in the bible by breed. * Greyhounds are the oldest purebred dog, * dating back to the Pharaohs of Ancient * Egypt. * In England, where the breed has been * known since the 19th century, it was * once forbidden for "commoners" to even * own a Greyhound. * Greyhounds are the fastest breed of dog, * reaching top speeds of 40+ miles per * hour! * Greyhounds can see CLEARLY for a * distance of one mile! * Many people who are allergic to dogs * are not allergic to Greyhounds. * Greyhounds are NOT guard dogs. * * They LOVE nearly everyone! |
