January 2011

A belated Happy New Year to everyone, although I’m may be in a minority, I’m enjoying this unusual winter; and the greyhounds are also, because they are able to still play in the larger fenced in yard.

The return into the house begins the ‘Goldie-locks’ activity of trying ever pillow to find the right one to snuggle into for a nap.

I would also like to send out a huge thank you to GRoNY volunteers who were our Santa for pet pictures, Larry, Kurt and Don and Jer.

Extreme appreciation to Melanie aka quick click photographer extraordinary, who captured the best photos, one person could not choose, and brought all seven amazing snapshots. Doreen completed the GRoNY team, and thank goodness she was prepared for any unexpected printing problems, which could and did occur, and no one even knew they happened until after the day of pictures was complete. Thank you all so very much.

Awareness clinics resume shortly and the start of another fabulous year is beginning. Those clinics which have been established are already listed on the events page. Other events and invites are in the process of being confirmed and further information will be posted as soon as available.

Until next month

November 2011

Greyhounds care little that there are a few colored leaves yet to fall from the trees, but the changing of the clocks will occur this weekend.

As I view it, this time change is somewhat easier to get the greyhound use to, because one of their favorite things will occur, getting fed meals an hour earlier. Speaking of things being earlier . . .

I needed to put another flea/tick application on the greyhounds and cat again this month; what a crazy year, the swamps of mosquitoes seem to have been replaced by the influx of those nasty little creatures: fleas and ticks. An ounce of prevention, whichever brand you choose, is for your benefit as much as it is for the greyhounds.

Also speaking of prevention, I would like to thank you for sending in updates with your emails and addresses, and for keeping the brass tags with our 877 number on your greyhound’s collar. None of us expect that moment of escape, but should it happen, there will be a phone number trail back to you.

Also, a reminder that 2012 greyhound calendars, wall or desk, are now available for purchase. Plus, there are only two awareness clinics this month, clinics will again resume in January. However Santa pet pictures begin with the first weekend in December. GRoNY will be at Saratoga the first weekend, great time to get a family photo for holiday greetings. Remember to let your friends and family know about the pet pictures dates too.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and please remember a greyhound’s nose is able to reach the top of table. Even a senior who knows he or she is not to do so, just may try.

Until next month

October 2011

This has been the year of complete weather changes, very quickly. Mother Nature has turned her weather knob and once again splashed beautiful color on our tree leaves, accompanied by cooler temperatures.

Speaking of a splash of color, do you still have your brass tag on your greyhound’s collar? While on vacation in Dewey Beach with two other directors, one of GRoNY’s worst fears occurred: a call regarding a lost greyhound; and because of that brass tag with our 877 number, a lost greyhound was able to get back home quickly. So take a moment to check your greyhound’s collar to be sure it is there; if you need another one, just email us. Plus does GRoNY have your updated information: new house address, did you change emails, or no longer have a home line and only use your cell phone, let us know. GRoNY is not intrusive; we just want to get your greyhound safely back home to you in the unexpected event that they get loose.

GRoNY is gearing up for Santa pictures, so if you need a family picture for a holiday greeting card, think of stopping by, dates and places are listed on the website. In addition, let your family and friend know that pictures are not just for greyhounds, it is for all loved family members.

Another reminder, this is the beginning of rake or scrap season, I give this warning with a bit of a snicker grin on my face because I’ve had to scrap already, didn't expect leaves to be off the trees yet, in Delaware they are still mostly green trees.

Until next month

September 2011

Not my normal newsletter chatter, because two words earthquake and hurricane, not often related to being in the news here in the northeast area.

It has been a week of telephoning, emailing and checking in on members, and I’ve still more to call and talk with however thought the newsletter would be able to reach more members faster.

So to those I have not talked to yet, you are in GRoNY’s thoughts, and you are extended family and as long as you didn’t change your telephone number, I’ll be calling at some point, or you can just save yourself from that and check in with GRoNY. Joy is doubled and Sadness divided when shared. This week has been both for GRoNY.

I promise to send a normal, chatter newsletter shortly.

August 2011

With canopies set up, x-pens available for greyhounds to rest, tables to sit at and one full of delicious food, GRoNY members and greyhound came to give us another wonderful memory. As always thanks to our wonderful cooks for their expertise, and for our members for sharing their side dishes and salads.

Thank you to all who have been emailing regarding GRoNY’s annual picnic return to Kelly Park. After three years away, it was nice to once again have the creek for the greyhounds to cool off in, a new pavilion’ much larger than before with many electrical outlets, which were used for cooling fans for the greyhounds. The children and young at heart were able also to enjoy the beautiful playground adjacent to the pavilion.

This year there were not as many greyhounds that dunk for biscuits this year, but many thanks and kudos to Abby for willingly helping to demonstrate again and again just how to retrieve the sunken biscuit, or piece of chicken.

Hope you share your pictures with us of your captured moments, or tell GRoNY about an activity that you enjoyed.

Until next month . . . . .

============================================================
July 2011

Oh what a wonderful life of a greyhound, playing in the back yard, soaking up the warm of the sun, splashing in the pool, eating grass and regurgitating it after coming back inside. Is it their way of saying ‘thanks’, perhaps, hounds are always communicating with us. One member is convinced her greyhound has a shoe faddish, because shoes are always disappearing.

As I now think about it, unless I block off my sewing room, my hounds seem to enjoy stealing my spoons of thread, which I am secretly glad because it is not my fabric they touch. So the next time your greyhound does a form of communication, (i.e. cozying up on your side of the couch, or wiping their face off on the side of couch, or my absolute favorite, the coach roach pose; all are their way of say ‘I love you’ and thanks for adopting me and making me part of the family. That being said . . .

July always comes in with a bang, a boom and that is just the first weekend, then sparkle and glitter will be at the end of the month, GRoNY’s annual picnic. GRoNY is trying something a little different; this year there will be an additional table with pet related garage sale items. If you have some slightly used, not in use items you would like to donate for sale, you can bring them to the clinic on the July 9th, or if you are attending the picnic, you can bring them on the July 31st. All the familiar events will still be held, from Dunkin’ for Biscuits, Golden Bone Awards, to the ever creative costume contest.

As most of us do, I mark events and appointments on my calendar, I would hope for myself it is because I do not want to double book but lately it maybe because I don’t want to forget. So GRoNY is hoping you mark your calendar to be with us at the picnic, so mark your calendar.

Hope to see you there . . .

============================================================

June 2011

This past weekend included splashing in the pool, playing in the backyard, resting in the shade and drooling as the smell of hamburgers, and chicken cooked on the barbeque; my greyhounds know how to enjoy life outside after sleeping in an air conditioned house and laying on soft pillows. Their favorite form of exercise is tail wagging, play bowing or side to side bouncing, and running. Although bowls of water with ice cubes are brought outside for drinking, more often the pool is the victim of emptying by thirsty greyhounds.

Before I get too distracted, for those who sometimes do not look at the GRoNY website, the date of the picnic is July 31st . Whatever direction you will be coming from, the webmaster put a link to a Google map. All the familiar awards and game favorites will be on the schedule, and practicing is suggested and permitted, because not all greyhounds understand Dunkin for Biscuits, although I understand because if you tossed a piece of my favorite chocolate in a basin of water, hmmmm I’d be thinking you were crazy too.

Remember to protect your greyhounds and yourselves, mosquitoes and ticks have been attacking everyone, canine and human. It seems they have migrated to the suburbs and backyard and are not just in the wooden areas anymore. Be sure to get your tick puller behind the head and little legs of the tick or you will just be pulling off the body and leaving the worse part still embedded in yourself or your greyhound.

GRoNY is still selling Great Escape tickets for $19.99, greyt price for a fun day.

Until next month,

April 2011

Last month I mentioned about cabin fever and how my greyhounds were going in circles, and then is occurred to me that this occurrence was just before we turn the clocks ahead for daylight saving time. If you’ve read a few of the GRoNY newsletters, a greyhound’s memory and internal clock are amazing. Greyhound memories for our schedules of waking up, kids coming home from school are astonishing when you first realize this oddity is occurring. Perhaps last month circling cabin fever greyhounds were the hounds’ internal clock reminding me, as did the news media, I should turn my physical clock in the kitchen ahead.

Note to self, mark physical calendar to watch which way greyhounds circle in the fall.

Has the bright sunlight brought daydreams of the GRoNY annual picnic? What do you mean no, okay here is a hint, it is only four months until the picnic in July. At times anticipation of seeing the greyhounds and their humans is dwarfed by stress of will everything be just right. Of course then I have a few glasses of wine and remember, its a greyhound get together and it always good. Plus now that I have your attention, with regards to the picnic, the location is going to be back to Kelly Park in Ballston Spa. A new pavilion has been built, there are picnic tables, and of course, a favorite with many greyhounds and members, the creek will provide greyhounds and members a place to cool off in between all the fun picnic activities. The playground is larger than the previous Menands location and there is also an enclosed dog run. More updates as time gets closer.

Until next month, grap a leash and make your greyhound happy with a walk.

============================================================
March 2011

A little bit of sunshine coming in the window has my greyhounds thinking it is warm enough to be outside. Cabin fever is common this time of year and as yet there is no vaccine available. Symptoms can appear very quickly, and are contagious if you have more than one greyhound. First signs would be the greyhound goes in circles, playfully bounces about, tossing a stuffie up and catching it, then squeaking the stuffie., before beginning once again going in a circle. Treatment for this ‘fever’ is a large enough area, and enough time to let the greyhound continue until they are tired and lay down. Other optional treatments would be a ride in the car to Petsmart, or a brisk walk.

Somehow even with high snow-banks and blustery March winds, there is a smile on my face because on the calendar it indicates our clinic on the third Sunday of the month, Spring begins ! Not sure we will be able to wear T-shirts but perhaps we may be able to have sneakers on instead of boots.

Brief as it may be, that’s all for this month.

============================================================
February 2011

Okay who forgot to turn off the snow switch ?! My 5 foot fence is now looking like a baby gate size. However, there is a plus to new snow, it covers the yellow and brown spots, or at least for a little while. Then like most of my fellow greyhound owners, the shoveling the path to a favorite spot needs to be done. Then the second half of the comedy routine begins, the deck (if you have one) becomes a snowy slip slid for greyhounds trying to get back inside to their warm favorite pillow or for that delicious treat for doing their business. With that mental vision in your head, now an even funnier vision, the look your greyhound gives you when they slip and fall, as if you put out your foot to trip them. Plus I need to remember to have camera in hand as I try to communicate to a foster greyhound, which has just come off the track, to slow down, two words not in any greyhound vocabulary, least of all a newbie.

Lots of activities, from picnic to fundraisers, are now in the planning, so if you have a favorite to list on your greyhound calendar, check the events page for date listings.

I mentioned fundraisers, one of which will be GRoNY again selling fundraiser tickets to the Great Escape for a small price of $19.99. I’ll be sending more detail information shortly; however, I’m taking orders for those tickets beginning now.

The camaraderie of greyhounds and greyhound owners is very apparent at any event; especially if greyhounds are allow to attend. Moreover even if the greyhounds are not allowed at some events, like proud parents, cell phones are promptly clicked to produce photos; both fur kids and skin kids. A mixture of many backgrounds blended with an encircling love of similar interests; perhaps you should think about attending an event this year.

Time for me to close, let’s hope that Punxsutawney Phil predicts an early spring, and even more so, the weather delivers one.

Until next time, stay safe and warm.

============================================================
January 2011

Each year as the holiday get close, there is a flurry of activities. There are holiday pictures and cards, this year also for GRoNY brought two new fosters to the mix, however the most interesting one is decorating the tree, or placing the Menorah somewhere safe to be lit. Those of us who have enjoyed many years of greyhound ownership have created many interesting ways to balance the decorations verses the high-speed wagging tail or the dancing backward hound. No these are not new yoga positions, but a burst of affection given to you by your greyhound. To experience this burst of affection is seeing the phrase bull in a china shop visualize to reality.

My reaction goes from OMG and Oh No to panic mother checking to make sure the greyhound, not the decoration, is okay and safe. That is why there is after Christmas sales, to replenish broken decorations or perhaps find new ones made of wood, or cement. On a recent bus trip to NYC with a side tour of Dyker Heights in Brooklyn, there was a house with an upside down Christmas tree, hooked from the ceiling, now that is a new way of dealing with the endangered decoration dilemma.

Doreen and I send our sincere thanks to everyone who came to Santa pictures, to our photographers Melanie and Daryl, plus our biggest thanks to our volunteer Santas: Kurt, Don and Jer. Not that there is a score card, however this years Santa with the most visitors was Don. All Santas' laps were left dry, and were exotic animal free this year, Ho Ho Ho there were smiling Santas.

As 2010 comes to a close, GRoNY looks forward to starting a new year of activities. To mention a few: awareness clinics, annual picnic (which continues to grow, thanks to our members), the Vegan Expo and the best activity, interacting with our members.

That all for this newsletter, Happy New Year, and be safe.

============================================================
December 2010

With the lighting of the first candle of the menorah, Chanukah began last evening, and the season of Christmas Advent began last Sunday. GRoNY extends our wishes to all our members for happiness and to new and renewed friendships during this season.

May I suggest, if you need a gift for Chanukah or Christmas, there are still a few 2011 greyhound calendars available, perfect for a grab bag gift also. Another recommendation would be to insert a family photo with you Christmas cards or seasonal greeting letter.

As a reminder, GRONY will be doing Santa Pictures in two Petsmart locations this year. We begin at Saratoga this coming weekend, and then only one day at Clifton Park Petsmart next weekend. The dates and time are listed on GRoNY’s website www.greyhoundrescueofny.com and click on events; and please feel free to let your relatives know also, our Santas love all pets, not just greyhounds.

Might I say though, it is fabulous not to have the ‘white stuff’ just yet. Yes I admit it, I need to do poop pick-up like everyone else, and dealing with no white stuff, it is easier to see them, rather than sunken frozen poopsicles dotting the yard.

Before closing I would like to say thank you to all the members who have come to the clinics, to the picnic, written emails, sent pictures and let us be part of their family. Furthermore a thank you to new members who adopted during this year, which brings you into our ever expanding extended family. Look forward to hearing from you always, and seeing you when you have time.

That all for now . . .

November 2010

Hello members. It has been too long since we have chatted, I’ll try not to let that happen again.

So how many of the new greyhound people out there had to put the Halloween candy up a little higher this year? Each year I need to test the candy before giving the treats out. There are times that I may be in the middle of testing when the doorbell rings; greyhounds just like myself, love chocolate, however, unlike the greyhounds I do not eat the wrapper, which is what my greyhound usually ends up with, because I eat the chocolate.

This year, I made some doggie brownies, so even my greyhounds enjoyed some carob/chocolate treats.

The 2011 greyhound calendars are available for purchase and pick up (at the clinic) if you have already reserved one. GRoNY used last year’s order list, so there should be sufficient wall and desk copies available.

GRoNY would like to give a shout out to the Critter Club and their fabulous teachers for once again letting us come to give a presentation with our greyhounds. Greyt questions from the students, the greyhounds enjoyed all the attention and knowing the next generation is obtaining knowledge to care for our future fur kids, and all without a voice, gives comfort and reassurance.

GRoNY will once again be doing Santa pictures. The first weekend will be in Saratoga. Think about making it a family picture, which you can use to create a Christmas card for relatives or a Chanukah greeting. The website ( www.greyhoundrescueofny.com ) has a complete listing of time, dates and places we will be. Plus remember to mention Santa pictures to your friends and family, to give them an opportunity to part of the fun.

It was good chattering again.
============================================================
August 2010

Hello hot and sizzling August. GRoNY definitely lucked out with the weather for the picnic this year. Just enough overcast to keep the temperature warm but not hot; towards the end of the picnic, there was a brief sprinkle, or at least that is what someone told me.

There were many familiar faces at the picnic, some new faces and a few visitors; greyhounds just are people magnetics. The costume contest is always interesting and this year there was everything from a greyhound bus to a bubble bee. There was a table full of greyhound items to bid on, and if you were lucky, your bid was the highest. Golden bones were awarded throughout the day, and door prizes won all day. A new award was created this year for our brave greyhounds that retrieved the treat from under the water, in the Dunkin for Biscuit game. In past years they retrieve a sunken treat, and received applause. However, beginning this year, to give a visual award, there will now be a Silver S T A R (Sunken Treat Aquatic Retrieval), utilized to distinguish greyhounds that were successful in their quest to obtain that sunken treat.

A big shout out to Abby, who was the first to venture under the water, which was a little high in the basin and she could have used an air tank; the water level was adjusted and several other greyhounds competed, and many silver stars were awarded.

Thank you to everyone who brought dishes to share, fruit, desserts, salads; and to GRoNY’s wonderful grill-men. Donated items for the auction were amazing, as were those who donated them. Thank you many times over and over again.

For those who were not at the picnic, you can check the GRoNY website www.greyhoundrescueofny.com for this year’s pictures, and perhaps think about being at next year’s GRoNY picnic.

Until next month . . .
============================================================
June 2010

June has arrived and although I have been very carefully with watching my greyhounds as they are outside in the backyard, and on our walks; a regurgitated mess indicated that I was not as watchful as I thought. Oh those greyhounds, you give them ‘greenies’ and still they need to chump on the grass. With the months and seasons changing, as a gentle reminder, try to watch what your greyhounds consume or pick up. I also have a maple tree with delectable ‘seeds’, and then there is the pine cones that fall off trees along the path we walk on, and one greyhound owner told me their hound picked up road kill, yukky ! As a note, road kill was not consumed but it did take a little bit of convincing not to do so. Greyhounds are a constant source of amusement and routine changers.

Has your routine changed; perhaps finally to a slower pace? There were a few days during May that the greyhounds were at a total stop. Food dishes were looked at; however the hounds did not want to eat. As a concerned fur parent, I quickly accessed that osculating fans needed to be turned on, dah ahhh this helped some because my greyhounds did manage to take a cookie treat, which sustained them, until that oh so brief heat wave broke.

There is much to be learned from our greyhounds. Perhaps like your June calendar there is days marked with scheduled days for graduations, birthday get-togethers; and keeping schedules are good, like having to do lists, everything get accomplished however remember to put into your routine a few end of the week campfires . . . while slipping a chilled beverage, and try not to end up doing a ‘cockroach’.

The annual GRoNY picnic is fast approaching; July 25 will be here very quickly. Each year has been different, (games, attendees) however getting to see lots of former foster greyhounds, members, their families and friends is always a plus for the directors, all are welcome. Hope you are able to be there this year.

That’s all for this month, stay cool and remember to hydrated.

============================================================
April 2010

Aahhhh Spring fever, totally neglected to turn my calendar page. The hounds are enjoying more walks around the neighborhood and as they rest on their pillows from the walk, having the windows open and letting in the fresh spring air.

It is such a hound house here, I’m putting away their fleece coats before I put away my winter gear; and try to do it quietly so that the hounds don’t hear, lest they think it is walk time again.

Have you Frontline yet? Just in case you are waiting until you hear the tags jingle from the first scratching, which many years ago as a newbie greyhound owner, I may have done, I no longer wait for that jingle of tags. Flea and tick season is here, and it is much easier to do it now, and protect your greyhound and your house from invasion or infestation (potato/poo tah toe).

Just a quick mention to mark your calendar for the annual GRoNY picnic, July 25, 2010. There is so much retro is fashion lately that I rifled through some old greyhound files, as I reminisced and chuckled at the old photos from the first picnic that I attended as a greyhound owner; I thought it would be ‘very in fashion retro’ for GRoNY to use a few of those award categories this year. Plus if you have a suggestion for a Golden Bone Award, let me know.

Hope all the Easter eggs were found, because the hounds will be sure to find any that were not. Until next month, good chatting with you.

============================================================
March 2010

Hello March ! Although it not Spring on the calendar yet, there is a happy feeling as each day gains a few extra minutes of daylight. There was lots of snow just a week ago, however, I was able to take the hounds for a short walk on dry pavement yesterday. By the end of the walk, my nose is red and runny, and the hounds are happy to snuggle into one of their pillows, but I feel rejuvenated. This month will be filled with change, and perhaps GRoNY can help you shake off your cabin fever with anticipation of an event.

I am already getting ready for this year’s GRoNY picnic, from making new signs with glitter alphabetics to a few surprises, there always needs to be a surprise, even the other directors do not know what the surprise is until the day of the picnic. GroNY will also be attending Shenendehowa Community Town Wide Event, Clifton Park, which will be in August. Another event not to be missed is this year’s NY Vegetarian Expo http://www.nyvegetarianexpo.org which will be held in Albany at the Empire State Plaza. For those who are perpetual kids at heart, GRoNY will once again be participating and selling tickets for Great Escape Spring Spin fundraiser. Being able to purchase a day pass at half price, having the plus advantage of being able to purchase another at half the regular price the day you go to Great Escape, or to upgrade to a season pass, is just fabulous. Tickets will be available March 24th, just in time to put into the Easter baskets for gift giving, instead of all that candy and plastic chickens that poop plastic colored eggs. Events are in all different locations, so hopefully you will be able to attend one.

By the middle of this month GRoNY will be receiving two new fosters. I should be more mundane about receiving a newbie, with so many years of fostering, but each time my enthusiasm and excitement of seeing that new ex-racer for the first time, and the process of learning his or her personality and quirks, is energizing. The non-fun part will be for me letting Dartangan, my cat, know that there is a new greyhound he needs to test and have his picture taken with, hopefully.

Nice chatting with you again,

============================================================

February 2010

Yeah for the winter thaw, it has made my yearly quest to pick up frozen popsicles so much easier, well easier to see sometimes not totally easy to pick up. Also was able to locate a name tag that was missing from one of my greyhounds, which I had replaced already, so now she has two.

Also, just how nice has it been to once again walk without stomping through snow, although you do need to avoid those in cars who think it is funny to drive and splash the melted snow puddle as you are walking, but then I should be use to my relatives by now.

Just a quick mention about the Great Escape Fundraiser; GRoNY participated last year, however, got a late start and many members, and family members had already purchased them elsewhere. The price is the same for the initial ticket, $19.99, which you will be able to use during the weekends in May, before the park officlally open to the public or anytime during the Great Escape season. Plus if you choose, at time of use, you can upgrade for a slight additional price, to a seasonal pass. Think about giving one as an Easter gift, or just because it is close to home and it is an great option for stay-cations, mention it to your co-worker, friends and family.

Time for me to zip up the suitcase and get headed West, chat with you next month.

============================================================
January 2010

It is the beginning of a new year. Did you make any New Year Resolutions? GRoNY can help you keep a resolution by giving you a suggestion, look forward to the picnic in July, just thinking about this event makes me tune out the wintry weather outside.

Resumption of awareness clinics bring excitement of meeting, greeting and talking to potential adopters; plus the new year brings the possibility of an adoption; of course one of my favorites is going on a road trip to pick up new foster greyhounds, and being part of their introduction to life after the track.

Thank you to all who took a chance on winning the numbered James Fiorentino print of famed race horse Cigar ridden by Jerry Bailey and signed by Jerry Bailey. Drake of Saratoga was GRoNY’s winner of this amazing print, and a special huge thank you to Laura for handling this fundraiser.

A huge thank you to GRoNY volunteers who were Santa for pet pictures, Larry, Kurt and Don and for our photographer Melanie and her super fast camera, she kept elf Doreen busy with both printers filled with a picture card.

Bye bye for now, oh I'm so lucky that greyhounds cannot read what I'm typing. Is it the same at your house, certain words spoken create a flurry of paw stamping and tails wagging? Oh and then there is the jingling of the car keys, or please do not even accidentally go near the leash, because you will be going out in this wintry weather just to calm your greyhound down. Kudos to you brave owners who walk their greyhounds each day, I am in awe of your commitment, especially on blustering windy days.

Until next month .....

============================================================
December 2009

Hello members . I hope everyone’s Thanksgiving was delicious and that the leftovers got put away before any greyhound got to indulge. Even after 14 years of owning greyhounds, this year a stick of butter disappeared. Totally amazes me, I did not hear anything, but most of you know how much noise a greyhound will make as they fluff their beds, or find a favorite toy to squeeze, or exhausted from a walk will plop down on the floor. So how it is I did not hear the glass dish clink against the table, it had to be at least louder than my cell phone on buzz, which I hear.

Yes I know I usually take off December from the newsletter, however this year my brain shut down to re-generate in October. Sadly for me, only one member noticed, hmmmmm I probably should have given that member a reward, oh well, now lucky you, I get to chatter some reminders to you this month.

Wanted to remind you about Santa pictures, GRoNY is only doing 3 dates: December 5, December 6, both at Niskayuna Petsmart and December 20 at Saratoga Petsmart. Each day from 11 am to 4 pm. Perhaps this is the year for your greyhounds’ photo.

Speaking of photos, the drawing for the Jerry Bailey riding Cigar print is coming up quickly, December 20; there is still time to purchase tickets.

With the impending cold winter days, look forward and think Spring Spin. GRoNY will again be part of the Great Escape Spring Spin fund-raiser. For those young at heart, for parents or grandparents looking for an Easter basket gift alternative to candy, or perhaps a gift for a birthday or other special event, consider purchasing your ticket from GRoNY; same low price as last year, and a tax deduction too. This ticket then can be upgraded and used for endless fun at the Great Escape, vacation place close to home, with endless rides and activities. I had a blast this year with my upgrade pass, and look forward to 2010.

Plans with regards to invitations to other events for next year are being reviewed and finalized, and will be posted on the events page of the website, and of course, I will send a shout out in the newsletter too.

Thanks for being part of the GRoNY family, and for letting us share in your lives.

November 2009

It seems that Autumn was just as short as Summer. The leaves on the trees barely had times to change color before the winds came and took them off the branches, creating the rake or scrap season. I’ve been lucky so far, but I have one very tricky female greyhound who is trying to trick me into scrapping off some poop from my shoe.

Speaking of tricking, I know I say it each year; please make sure your greyhound is secure before opening the door for trick or treaters on Halloween, good advice for both new adopters and for perpetual owners.

Tis the season of change, clocks turn back, coats for the hounds comes out, and calendars. As a reminder for those who did not reserve a calendar, there are still wall and desk 2010 greyhound calendars available to purchase.

Also as a reminder to the all members, new and old, please keep those gold tags on your greyhound’s collar. Recently GRoNY received a telephone call that a greyhound was found in Florida, although scary as those telephone calls are; the owner was located, and a happy reunion occurred, because the gold tag was on the greyhound’s collar. So during this season of up coming holidays with relatives coming in, or going to visit relatives, some cautionary advice, keep the gold tag on the collar..

GRONY will be doing Santa Pictures in December, dates and locations are listed on the events page. Remember the pictures are open to all, so email a friend or family member to let them know to bring their pets.

It was nice chatting with you, until next time . . . . .

September 2009

September got here fast, I’m not finished with having summer fun yet. With the monsoons of July, and August being a mix of cool to sauna, perhaps this month with be dry , sunny and still full of fun.

I have been to a few county fairs, and have been treated to several canine expeditions. Not all agility performances, some were rescued dogs (one was part greyhound) and all were very amazing in their abilities from climbing ladders to walking on a ball. At the Altamont fair there was a one that rode a motorized tri. All were entertaining and there were many other demonstrations I attended, but none were doing a cockroach, or happy to squeak a stuffie before collapsing on their pillow, or the famous sleep race with their little legs moving sideway in a running motion as they dream of getting to the couch before me or perhaps they were remembering a play date fun run; now that is a retired greyhound’s talent to entertain.

GRONY will again be attending the NYS Capital Region Vegetarian Expo at the Saratoga City Center, http://www.nyvegetarianexpo.org . Which will be held on September 19. Admission is free to attend; this is NOT a greyhound activity, ONLY GRoNY foster greyhounds.

Your help is needed . . . as most of the members who visit the website already know, two broken leg foster greyhounds arrived in mid August. Along with some of the obvious extra work involved for the foster families, there is also an added expense to GRoNY. To defer some of the expense, a fundraiser has been created; and through the generosity of the Center for Disability Services in Albany, who has donated a numbered James Fiorentino print of famed race horse Cigar ridden by Jerry Bailey. The print is also signed by Jerry Bailey. Thank you to Don and Laura who paid for the framing. Soon, you will be able to view the framed picture at our website http://www.greyhoundrescueofny.com and please feel free to tell friends and relatives about this unique fundraiser.

Thats all for this month

AUGUST 2009

GRoNY picnic 2009 is now part of our history however I’m glad the memories, an email with an attached picture, brings it back and gives me a smile. Of course, having the perspiration hold off until we got home was reason enough to smile at the picnic.

The greyhounds who challenged the Dunkin for Biscuit always bring laughter. Truly there are a few greyhounds that could be certified scuba divers . . . when it comes to going for biscuits that is. There were actually bubbles rising as they submerged for their prize.

Plus the rock group ‘Kiss” made an appearance, with a hula dancer turning a few heads, but it was the “French Maids’ who trotted in and cleaned up . . . first prize for the costume contest, that is.

There are so many thank you's to be given: always to our cooks, Mike, Kurt and Jim; our favorite retailers Jessica and Jason, registration greeter Doreen, and extreme ticket seller Laura, Barb and Gail who were my extra arms and legs during games. However, the biggest one is to the members who attended. Thank you for bringing delectable dishes and desserts to share, remember to email those recipes to share please. Mostly I thank you for the camaraderie, and four hours I look forward to each year.

Greyhound members are just as laid-back and enjoyable to be with as the greyhounds themselves, of course when we do the cockroach, it does not look as graceful as when the real greyhounds. Guess we will need to keep practicing.

Not sure how I thought of this year's surprise, but with the weather, it seem very timely and useful. Until next month.

July 2009

Did you get to see any fireworks? No I’m not talking about the lightning from the thunderstorms, but the colorful splash in the night sky and big boom that vibrates through your ears kind of fireworks. I didn’t get to go to New York City on the bus trip for the 4th, but Clifton Park Commons with my friend Patty was just as much fun. Fireworks and friends have that unique ability to regenerate and bring a smile, much like enjoying a picnic.

Did I say picnic, yes I did and do I need I ask . . . . have you made your reservations for the GRoNY July 26, 2009 picnic yet? Is it because of the weather? Hmmmm yes I know it has been quite wet and it may seem like we are living in the rain forest region, and I was not planning on doing the naked moonlight dance this year; so because there is always balance in life, and hopefully weather, moisture now means dry later.

So let me remind you that there are several ways of letting us know you and your hounds will be coming to Menands on July 26th , which is helpful so that we have an enough food. One way is to click on the GRoNY’s website www.greyhoundrescueofny.com and print the registration form, fill it out and mail it in or send a quick email to myself, the webmaster or one of the other directors or you could do the old fashion thing and use the telephone.

Okay, I got less than three weeks to finish stuff for the picnic, so that's all the chatter from me for this month.

============================================================

June 2009

Hello to June. The grass and trees are green once again. This will be my first year without a vegetable garden. With the garden not in the middle of the yard, I have change the routine of my greyhounds, who once in the yard would chase each other around it, as I was inside weeding or picking veggies. It took the hounds a while, well very brief while, before walking through territory that once was not enter-able. The soil is still soft, very inciting for digging, and as we all know, hounds that are allow to do something, believe it to be a rule. So although I may not be picking and weeding, I’m still going to need to watch over the garden area so that it does not become the sequel to the
Disney movie HOLES.

Have you marked your calendar with the picnic date, July 26? For me, it seems as soon as the calendar is turned and I see ‘June’ that’s when my panic mode begins. As the picnic hourglass is turned over and the days begin to count down and the picnic gets closer, my panic will decrease. Although it would seem like it should be the opposite, the closer the date of the picnic comes, and to-do lists are completed, I’m ready just to see everyone, all the greyhounds and just have some fun. Hope you will be able to come this year.

For those who bought the half price fundraiser tickets, I hope you enjoyed the Great Escape. I picked a fabulous day and had a great time on the lazy river and enjoyed many of the other rides also.

That’s all for this month, it is time for me to get to my picnic to do lists.

============================================================

May 2009

Finally I have put on short sleeves and sandals, and after sweeping up those weird helicopter things’ (tree seeds) from my maple tree that litter my deck, I was able to enjoy a few brief moments of relaxation, watching my lazy ex-racing greyhounds meander through the back yard. Ahh if only we were all able to talk to the animals, I would have told that rabbit to stay the heck out of my flower garden. This garden is along my privacy fence and is protected from my hounds with a very flimsy two foot flower fence. I did not hear nor see anything however, before I blinked, the greyhounds were in full chase, up and down the flimsy fence which now not only protected the flower bed, but a rabbit hopping up and down over the perennials. Eventually, the rabbit bolted across the full length of the yard and just barely made its escape.

I mention this as a reminder for all of us. I know my greyhounds were safe and in a fenced yard, but they were not thinking of their safety, the hounds were in flash back mode and only focused on getting the hopping rabbit. Any lure may catch our greyhounds’ eye while walking, so hold those leashes tight, because they will not know to stop, and there will not be a fence to stop them, if the leash slips from your hands, they will be in chase mode. My greyhounds got a cookie for not catching the rabbit, and now I bang old pots to make noise and get the rabbits out of the yard before letting the greyhound out to play.

On another note, thank you all for letting me know I was not the only one to have gotten a tick attack. Somehow mosquitoes, although annoying, seem less evil. Well I mean the regular type of mosquitoes, not the ones that cause the West Nile virus.

One more very important item, the date for the annual picnic is Sunday, July 26. Mark you calendars, feel free to send in suggestions, comments or your thoughts on items and events that you enjoyed from previous picnics you attended, and want us to continue.

Okay, the hour is late and I need to make my May 1st deadline, . . . so that all for this newsletter.

============================================================

April 2009

Ahhhh it is wonderful to again see the crocuses bloom and inspecting many perennials sprouting, to be outside doing some raking and yard clean-up, and enjoy watching the greyhounds play. Yes, Spring feels good, after our long winter but does anyone know if there is a Frontline for humans? I’ve already Frontlined my fur kids, however, after the day of raking and enjoying the outside, before going inside everyone is carefully checked for unwanted hitch-hikers. Diligent to care for my hounds, however I totally forgot to check me. With pants tucked in my socks, and white sweatshirt snug under my garden gloves, and after coming in, taking a shower and changing clothes, I was not expecting to find a tick imbedded in my side, just under my armpit.

Sometimes the great outdoors is overrated, or just too buggy. As an alternative to raking and dodging ticks and such, this weekend go to the Empire Plaza, Paws for a Cause will be there Friday and Saturday. There are seminars with regards to pets on first aide, dental care and many demonstrations and talks. It is free, sometime finding a parking space may prove challenging on Friday because of work day. Sorry, no fur kids permitted.

There are an abundance of events and walks that are coming up to enjoy with your greyhounds, plus a few other fundraisers beside GRoNY's Great Escape ticket sales. Should you rather have a ceramic greyhound, there is a fundraiser for Second Chance Greyhounds on a 19” white glazed stoneware hound, donated by Jonathan Adler. Drawing will be April 15th . http://www.secondchancegreyhounds.org/ceramic-greyhound/

Until next month, remember to check the greyhounds and yourself for ticks. Somehow bees and mosquitoes don't seem as bad now, both of them create a noise
for me to get away and avoid.

============================================================

March 2009

I’m grateful for the recent winter thaw, even if I do have to look at all those branches that fell during the ice storm we experienced. With most of the snow melted, sun was shining and my greyhounds and I were out for a brisk walk. By brisk I am referring to the temperature, not the speed of walking, there was just too many smells to be sniffed for greyhounds to get into high speed walking. Winter is not over and the prediction of snow coming once again gives me a reprieve from seeing those branches that fell until a warmer and sunnier day.

Speaking of warm and sunny, that’s the best time for picnics and fundraising activities. One of the fundraising opportunities which GRoNY has an opportunity to participate in is selling tickets to The Great Escape and Splash Water Kingdom. Being a total kid at heart and having many relatives, going at least once to Great Escape is a given. Being able to purchase a day pass at half price, having the plus advantage of being able to purchase another at half the regular price the day I go to Great Escape, is just fabulous. Are there any other Peter Pan, let’s never grow up members out there?

There is another not to be missed event. That is of course the annual GRoNY picnic. For those who attended last year’s picnic event, there were several surprises, and the directors will again try to bring or create a few surprises for those who attend this year.

One more exciting note; time change is next week, so we will be able to walk the hounds after dinner without the need to use blinking lights on our greyhounds’ collars or ourselves. Plus Spring, according to meteorology will be here by the end of the month. Oh joy, besides fallen branches I’ll be able to see the poopsicles I was not able to pick up during the thaw.

That is enough chatter for this month.

============================================================

February 2009

Winter is always a mixture of snow storms, ice and wind. However, good timing or a mixture of cabin fever and dry roads for the day and the first clinic of the season was filled with laugher, chatter and many greyhounds. Thank you for coming and also for remembering to keep the aisles clear, although the customers who walked by were the ones stopping in the aisle, to pet a greyhound, talk to one of our members, and were amazed how quiet and gentle all greyhounds were; everything combined created a crowded clinic.

GRoNY is grateful that our members do not hibernate, and even more grateful that our former foster greyhounds remember us when they come.

Events and activities are just now being scheduled, as information and details of functions are confirmed, it will be in a upcoming newsletter and also posted on the events page. Member participation is welcomed and encouraged always. GRoNY does not have a suggestion ‘box’ to drop a note in, just a post office one however to save yourself a stamp, write an email or stop at a clinic.

Time for me to get breakfast bowls started and then try to eliminate some of those frozen popsicles out in the yard. So that’s all for this newsletter, stay warm by hugging your greyhound, that is if they will let you on the couch.
============================================================

January 2009

Have you been enjoying holiday buffets or smorgasbords? Well there was a buffet in sez foster home recently by accident. As greyhound owners, we know about routines. Not sure why I didn’t remember to place the bowls on the counter and bring the scooped food to filled them; that is my routine. As I was carrying the filled (greyhounds’) bowls for dinner to my kitchen counter, one very starving, food originated, helpful greyhound helped too much and two bowls or kibble tumbled out of my hands. After the initial noise of the bowls hitting the floor, scattering of greyhounds, and my laugher at being foolish and forgetting the better routine, my greyhounds and the foster greyhounds came back and proceeded to have a kibble eating contest. I was very lucky, no alpha hounds, so all shared and before I could get to the broom, there was no kibble to clean up.

A huge thank you to GRoNY volunteers who were Santa for pet pictures. There were six days of pet pictures and 7 Santas: Larry, Kurt, Cliff, Don, Tim and Mike B. Due to the ice storm and roads being closed and blocked, GRoNY also thanks Mike N. for filling in until the Santa of the day got there. Thank you to GRoNY’s two photographers: Daryl and Melanie and to our elves Doreen, Pam, Chris, Jason, Jessica and Jim. In case you are wondering, the most unique pet photo this year, two pet rats, and Santa didn’t get to hold them, one was on the shoulder and one in the hand of the owner who sat next to Santa.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!! I send this greeting before midnight for three (possible) reasons: I may be partying; my cable may go out; or I may be asleep, all are possibilities. So here is to a new year of possibilities, events, adoptions, and new friends.

Stay safe, warm and when you can, stop by a clinic and let us see how GRoNY former fosters are doing, or an email picture is good too.

============================================================

November / December 2008

Tis the season for setting clocks back, but how do I reset my greyhound’s internal clock which does not understand the ending of daylight saving time. Adjusting to this change is of course done over a period of time, hmmmm probably the adjustment for the greyhounds will be complete in time for daylight saving time to begin again. The ‘Murphy Law’ is now turning into ‘Murphy Time’.

Speaking of adjustments, there are three newbies who are in the process of learning a new routine. For those who may not check the website, there was a greyhound run just last week and GRoNY picked up three new ex-racers, two females and one male. Always an exciting and busy time for foster homes, as well as for the new fosters who begin learning how to adapt to a new schedule, leading to a completely different ‘finish line’, becoming an adopted loved family member.

As a reminder, GRONY will be doing Santa Pictures in three Petsmart locations again this year. Please take note the first weekend will be split between two locations, for location nearest you, go to the website www.greyhoundrescueofny.com and click on events. Santas are now listed, to enable friends and relatives to know when and where a certain Santa will be available.

This is the last newsletter of the year, and before closing I would like to say thank you to all the members who have come to the clinics, to the picnic, written emails, sent pictures and let us be part of their family. Furthermore a thank you to new members who adopted during this year, which brings you into our ever expanding extended family. Look forward to hearing from you always, and seeing you when you have time.

Until January 2009 . . . .

============================================================

October 2008

October brings colored leaves, the smell of homemade applesauce being cooked on the stove and at least in my greyhounds’ world, the need to wait until the fog has lifted, the ground is dry and (my) fear of their slipping and falling while they run and play in the big backyard has passed. Truly it is a joy having a fence yard for them to play in, when it is dry and sunny-ish. So for two seasons, one being Spring and now Fall, changing their routine/attention somewhat is (for me) necessary. I'm aided in this task by the jiggling of a leash coming off the hook to take a walk, or the rustling of a cookie/treat bag. Being greyhounds, (two year olds with four legs and fur) their attention is easy to divert, and a new safer routine is created for the autumn season.

Speaking of diversions, and if you are so inclined there are a few events this month which enable you to bring your greyhound to, if you are so inclined. Saturday October 4th at 11 am, in celebration of the festival of St. Francis of Assisi, there will be a Blessing of Animals, in the courtyard of St. John’s Lutheran Church, 160 Central Ave. Albany, NY. There is public parking lots and street parking. I know there are several members who live further away, so if you want your greyhound blessed, just check with one of your local churches, they may be having a similar event.

There is also the 3rd Annual Halloween Parade and Party in Saratoga Sunday, October 5th at 11 a.m.

Of course there is a Petsmart close to just about all members and on Tuesday, October 21st , 6 pm to 8 pm, there will be a Howl-O-Ween costume contest, photo event and the greyhound receives a goodie bag.

These are just a few fun events, which are open to all fur kids, so remember to forward this to your friends to let them know about the events; then enjoy them together.

I hope you are able to attend one, perhaps all of these opportunities.

That is all for this newsletter.
============================================================

September 2008

Here is this month's newsletter, Enjoy

In some ways, September is the beginning of the year. One example would be this month is always a flurry of activity in all households, whether getting back to a school schedule, or for some, preparing to go south for the cold winter months. Perhaps it is finally getting to the ‘to do list’ started in the Spring that the heat of summer delayed.

Speaking of to do lists, GRoNY has a greyt suggestion. For those of you whom are vegetarians, or for those who wish to just get a little more healthy, hmmm well maybe eat healthy than the last few months. GRoNY will be at Saratoga City Center for the NYS Capital Region Vegetarian Expo, http://www.nyvegetarianexpo.org is their website to review. If you missed it last year, for goodness sake, circle the date in red on your greyhound calendar now, it is a must come and see, learn and taste type of place to be.

Did I say greyhound calendar? Well just in case you thought I was forgetting, I didn’t. Yes, GRoNY will be ordering 2009 Greyhound Calendars. I have a list started, and my name is actually the second on it, because Elmo’s parents (Golden Bone winner for most flecked tummy at this year’s picnic) asked me to put them on the list at the picnic for a calendar. Anyways, the list has been started, and the order will be going in, sent an email if interested.

Excitement of new fosters coming also is part of this month. Sort of a twist on back to school schedule, not books, buses and bag lunches, but how to do stairs, learning how to share toys and pillows and just being loved and not expected to run for your life but being a loved member of the family. Indeed, September is a beginning of a new year and new life for some greyhounds. So keep checking the website for pictures of the new fur kids, remember to circle September 13, to come to the Vegetarian Expo (free admission, free parking, educational information, sorry no personal greyhounds).

One more item before I close, today (August 29) Becka-Bou, proud parent Marybeth; is being sculpted by Louise Peterson, oops as I typed, so I got to get out of here and up to the Terry Lindsey Equidae Gallery at the Holiday Inn, 232 Broadway, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866. Now.

That’s all for this month,

============================================================

August 2008

GRONY 2008 picnic began like a Betty Boop flick, condemned pavillon, oh woe with us, 2008 picnic may need to be cancel, is there a hero out there to help? Help to locate park with pavilion that accepts greyhounds (fur-kids) and criteria: same date and time and within a reachable driving distance? Taaah dahhh there was a hero, not the Canadian Mounties, or a cowboy with a white hat but a Santa, yes one of our pet picture Santas help save the picnic, using all the criteria of course, and keeping with Betty Boop theme, including railroad tracks, which once crossed brought you to the park with the pavilion.

For those who attended, I hope you had fun, and were surprised and liked your take home gift. There are always many wonderful memories of the day, however one of the best parts for me was having more than one prize for the 50/50 raffle. I didn’t win anything on the raffle, however, just knowing there was more than one prize. So many times a 50/50 raffle ends with the first pull of the tickets, however GRONY actually had six different prizes available. Not your normal 50/50 raffle but then GRONY picnics are greyt celebrations for our members. There were many participants for Dunkin for Biscuits and some of the looks that this dropper of biscuits got from those greyhounds were priceless, both before they went dunking for the biscuit or before they didn’t. The costumes contest was smaller this year but unique, and the greyhound contestants were once again, gracious through our applause and laugher, and being dressed up in hot, humid weather. There was a small swimming pool of water for the greyhounds to relax and cool off in, (after and before contests) a wonderful substitute for the Kelly Park creek, thank you Chris for thinking of bringing one. Chris also helped with picnic set up.

A huge thank you to our cook Mike, and back up chefs Kurt and Jim. This year was back to basic with charcoal, and as always, everything was delicious, including the delectable and varied side dishes and desserts brought by our members to share. Thank you also to registration table and greeters, Pam and Daryl, they make order out of calamity, making sure everyone had a name tag, door prize tickets, handling 50/50 raffle, registering costume contestants; etc. Jessica and Jason were helped this year by Brendan, who lured members over to the merchandise table with his cute smile and wonderful laugh. A few more thank you, to Doreen and Jim, the nail clipping duo, and to Don, Mike and the two Lauras for helping with clean up after the picnic. Whew I think I got everyone.

Before ending this review of the picnic, I would also like to mention how wonderful it was to see ‘GRONY icons’ members at this year’s celebration. Nancy M and Edith S were members and greyhound owners before myself, plus Scott E and Amy C , both co-founders of GRONY. Just having them at the picnic, hoping they enjoyed themselves and perhaps having them see the continuation and growth of the group. This year’s picnic may have started as a sleeper flick but became a sensational memory.

This year’s picnic may have started as a sleeper flick but became a sensational memory.

Until next month . . . . .

============================================================

July 2008

Recently I received a forwarded email from a member regarding cocoa mulch. With the warm weather, everyone is enjoying their yards and walks. While on your walks, you are able to stop your greyhound from picking up something and eating it, however while enjoying your own backyard, your greyhound safe within your fenced yard, who would think mulch around trees and plants could harm your fur kid. http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/cocoamulch.asp

Greyhound are 2 years old fur kids, who if it smells good, or if it smells at all, may put it in their mouths and try to eat it. I probably should use mulch around the trees, it does look nice but I’m not a mulch person, I like perennials so, I planted Hosta, which the greyhounds have repeatedly ‘watered’, and trampled. Yet each spring that Hosta comes back for another season.

Speaking of seasons, it is July and that means picnics. Yes, as our members will already remember, two weeks ago, I wrote that the picnic was is in jeopardy, there were many members who were still going to ‘rough it’ with the directors, in open field and using porta-potties; perhaps for the camaraderie, getting to talk and socialize with other greyhound owners, and maybe just a bit of bragging and greyhound picture showing; or they were just as crazy as the directors in not wanting to cancel the picnic. What a difference two weeks can bring. With the help of a Santa – yes, there is a Santa, a pet Santa. Actually, one of our volunteer Santa (December pet pictures), located and booked the pavilion in Menands pocket park. So if you are not on our member email list, to which directions have been emailed individually, the website will also have them available, click on the turning picnic table and come, rain or shine, lots of tables, a great playground and hopefully lots of greyhounds.

That all for this month, hope to see you at the picnic.

============================================================

June 2008

Nice weather is finally here and the greyhounds are enjoying soaking up some warm sunshine, eating the grass and of course the gourmet appetizer, , rabbit droppings; which because of its richness, or because it is not dog food, will be regurgitated at 2 o’clock in the morning. Yes I was outside with the greyhounds, but silly me, was weeding the perennial garden. However, I consider myself lucky, I know of one member who has rabbits, wild turkeys, deer and the occasional Canadian goose. She does not have a fenced in yard, hence all the wildlife can visit, and walking her hounds on the leash, she is able to see what they may try to eat. I have a poop insert which I will be using from now on; its main purpose is for those hounds that like poopicles in the winter or perhaps brood mamas, but now it has another useful function. Like all two year olds (who are actually 4 and 5 years old_ my four legged fur kids will come up with something new to make me laugh; which leads to me having an endless source of writing material for the newsletter.

Gosh it’s a whole paragraph and I still need to mention the most important date other than adoption of your fur kid, July 20, the annual picnic. GRONY is receiving picnic forms, this year I believe the New Paltz members were the first to have their form in, this will give them plenty of time to procure a loan for the gas to come up from exit 18 of the thruway. Now I know what you are wondering, why it was not one of us directors to be the first, becaue we are busy creating awards, thinking of new games and hoping this year’s picnic is even better than the last, let me think, it is 14 or 15; I know this will be the 11th
year at Kelly Park, there was 2 or 3 years at a fire hall in Scotia and one original picnic, which is the only one I was not at, only because it was before I adopted by first greyhound. Anyways each year is better than the previous year.

On Memorial Day about 8 people from various organizations, and those interested in creating a better way of finding lost greyhounds met and combined thoughts and ideals. In the new adoption folders there will be additional forms, to be completed by you, information that could be critical to helping us in finding your greyhound. It is our hope you will not ever need to utilize it. Thoughts are to create an attachment to a separate email, which will go to all members who do not have this in their present folder.

I definitely chatted too much this month, kind of makes up for those months when I have little to say.

Until next month,

============================================================

May 2008

Once again Mother Nature is messing with our minds. I was fooled with the recent warm temperature, into turning off the heat, thank goodness I didn’t put away the flannel or fleece.

Plans for the annual GRONY July picnic are in motion. Further information will be posted on the website and sent in a separate email. So mark your calendars for the date, there is always something that occurs unexpected. All of which now bring a smile and/or laughter, but at the time, not part of the plan. Last year after getting set up, someone came to open the concession stand at the pavilion; which had never been open in the 10 years of having the picnic at Kelly Park. Were you attending the year the cat that was focused on a bird or something and didn’t realize he was walking by so many greyhounds; that was totally not part of the picnic plan, but definitely a head turning, stimulating occurrence. Okay so there was actually semi chaos, heart pounding and disorder for a while: then the bird got away, the cat was okay and the picnic continued.

There are many events to enjoy and be able to bring your greyhound with you, unless noted otherwise. Although not a vegan, in September I’m looking forward to the NYS Capital Region Vegetarian Expo (http://www.nyvegetarianexpo.org/ ). Free admission, demos, recipes (shhhh don’t let them know I put chicken in a pasta dish); plus so much more. There is also the Whisker’s Walk, the Grapehound Wine Tour, although GRONY will not attend as a group, as individuals we will enjoy them with you. However the picnic event which has taken place in September for the past several years, jointly hosted by the area’s greyhound groups, held at Colonie Park, sadly has been cancelled.

That enough chitchat, go enjoy a walk with your greyhound, and as always, hope to see you at one of the events.

============================================================

March / April 2008

Note: To GRONY members: As yet the lost greyhound, Prince, has not been found. There are so many places for him to hide, searching is difficult but even more so without sightings to center in on, and yes we are worried because of the weather, amount of time and his age.

We continue to hope, and search.

April is a week away and most of March has passed, and my greyhounds are very watchful to see if I even get close to the leashes. Does not matter to greyhounds that you are just re-hanging the leashes back up from your walk, you are touching the leashes.

As mentioned in a previous newsletter, greyhounds have an internal clock; as to your family’s schedule and also includes seasonal weather changes. It is dry and pleasant outside, so let the weatherman yak on the television about wet snow flurries for tomorrow morning; it will not subdue the excitement of today’s walk.

Speaking of walks, once again there are many events GRONY is being invited to; one is the Whiskers’ Walk in the Colonie Crossings on June 21. This one will have small animals, with owners who may not understand ‘high prey’, so keen greyhounds should be kept on a shorten leash. GRONY’s webmaster keeps the events page updated. When you have a free weekend and want to show off your greyhound while also taking a walk, be sure to check if there is an event, there is sure to be a familiar face or at the very least a greyhound friend you just have not met yet.

Having owned and fostered greyhounds for a while now, mostly I thought myself to be the teacher. However, greyhounds teach lessons and give examples of caring to us everyday. To name a few: unconditional love, being optimistic, happy even though some have sad eyes. Their ability to express excitement by wagging their tail, or by running in circles and the always crazy one (for multiple greyhound owners) capturing their favorite toy to show you. All the greyhounds seem to have the same favorite toy.

Trying to equal their unconditional love is futile. Being happy and optimistic is a bonus of being an adopted ex-racer, perhaps even excitement is too. We buy them toys to play with, treats in bags that crinkle and make noise, take them for walks and fill their dishes, however the greyhounds do so much more by filling our lives with their presence.

Remember to hug your greyhound, be alert to keep them safe and secure, because all the lessons they teach and examples they give are because they trust us to know they are sight-hounds.

============================================================

February 2008

As the page is turned on the calendar, GRONY begins February with the anticipation of new foster greyhounds coming, an exciting time which is only equal to the day the new greyhound arrives or is picked up from a designated delivery site. It is difficult to translate the camaraderie of everyone waiting for the hauler and greyhounds to arrive, or just how special it is to click on the leash and lead the greyhound towards their first ride with windows to look out and of course put nose smudges on. The magic continues for this foster parent and although I know it requires commitment and patience, I look forward to clicking on that leash.

An impromptu reunion occurred at the first GRONY clinic of the year. As with all clinics but especially the first of the new year, a mixture of getting back in the groove of answering questions and talking greyhounds with all who stopped to pet or just see an actual ex-racing greyhound. There were many who stopped to ask questions and take informational pamphlets. Whether this was the brief winter thaw or a little cabin fever, it was a busy clinic, and GRONY had help to those asking questions; three former directors and several members were there to assist.

Time for me to close this newsletter, some think the groundhog can predict spring, and then there are gardeners who watch for the first crocus to appear; which means the ground is getting warmer. As a greyhound owners, we wait for the day that greyhounds take longer than 5 minutes outside to do their business, or when there is a dry patch of deck showing and the greyhound lays down to soak up some early sun rays.

Stay warm and safe.

January 2008

A huge thank you to our volunteers who were Santa for pet pictures: Cliff, Rick, Larry, Kurt, Pat and Tim. To our most excellent photographer, Daryl and to all of the elves Doreen, Pam, Chris, Jason, Jessica and Jim. Three full weekends of laugher and fun.

GRONY would also like to send a thank you to Petsmart. Petsmart upgraded photo equipment to digital camera and printers this year. This enabled GRONY to take several pictures, and the customer selected their favorite before the elves printed the photo.

Each year the Santas secretly hope to have the most unique pet photo, or is it they just hope not to be pee on. Anyway, this year, rookie Santa Pat A, had an alpaca came to visit and have a picture taken. What an alpaca cutie; check out the gallery for the picture, and for the alpaca website, (which is listed below the picture), to learn more about alpacas. This year there was also a cockatiel that perched on Santa Rick’s hand for a picture. Once again the weather was mostly good for GRONY, enabling pets and owners to travel to Petsmart. Even the days with snow and ice, many pets came to sit on and/or be held, lick Santa’s face and giving him lots of kisses, pulling on his beard and eventually have their pictures taken with him.

Are you looking forward to awareness clinics for 2008, GRONY directors are. Those clinics which have been established are already listed on the events page. Other events and invites are in the progress of being confirmed and further information will be forthcoming.

In closing, GRONY thanks you for your support during our 2007 events and for letting us be part of your extended family. GRONY looks forward to seeing you during 2008 at a clinic, or an event or just hearing from you through an e-mail.

Until then, HAPPY NEW YEAR

============================================================

November / December 2007

GRONY usually tries to send the November-December newsletter a few days early, first to give cautionary advice to our newly adopted greyhound owners and as a reminder to all our greyhound members, please make sure your greyhound is secure before opening the door for trick or treaters on Halloween. An open door to GRONY is more scarier than ghosts and goblins.

On to a more seasonal question. Is everyone having aches and pains from raking leaves? The most recent wind and rainy days has taken the color from the trees and sprinkled a mosaic tile look over the lawn. Eventually the mosaic beauty needs to be raked and bagged, but for a few moments, enjoying Mother Nature’s gentle side gives me a reason not to rake, at least until after my morning coffee.

GRONY will be doing Santa Pictures in three Petsmart locations this year: Saratoga, Niskayuna and Clifton Park, respectively. This year’s picture will now be digital, not Polaroid. Check the event listing for date and time. Remember the pictures are open to all, so email a friend or family member to let them know.

This newsletter is sparse, that is perhaps why I take December off, I need to recharge my brain cells.

Here’s hoping the rest of 2007 brings continued good health and happiness to all our members.

============================================================

October 2007

Although the crisp air, the changing trees are the initial beauty of October’s autumn, it is also the beginning of greyhound’s mythical rewinding of an internal clock. I’m sure some of us have experience watching an otherwise inactive greyhound dash outside, doing circles. For those of us who have fence yards, laughter and amazement at how far they lean to complete the circle. Greyhounds are always routine, from eating at the same time, to their favorite spot to cuddle, and even to knowing when seasons are changing, without flipping the calendar page.

I’m not sure if there was a blessing of the animals at the UNYGD, or should you wish to have another pet blessed on Saturday October 6 at 11:00 am, at St. John’s courtyard, 160 Central Avenue. Albany, NY, the festival of St. Francis of Assisi will be celebrated. This festival is a celebration for all pets who make our lives better.

Brief newsletter I know, but time to close for another month. I send sincere thanks for all the well wishes on my recovery. No one enjoys being sick, however being sick and also missing a huge combined greyhound picnic, well that just added misery to pain.

So send me some digital pictures, so I may vicariously enjoy what I missed.

See you soon

September 2007

Here the scoops for September, happy reading !

Just when you were thinking there was nothing to do, GRONY gives you some events to come and enjoy.

I glace over the month of September in my 2007 greyhound calendar with excitement at some familiar activities which are available this month for our members. Plus a new event, on Sept 15th, due in large part to an anonymous benefactor who paid for our vendor space, in memory of Noli, GRONY will be attending the NYS Capital Region Vegetarian Expo at the Saratoga City Center, http://www.nyvegetarianexpo.org/ is their website to review. Admission is free however GRONY is limited to bring ONLY foster greyhounds. GRONY is grateful for this unique opportunity and extends a thank you to the
anonymous benefactor.

Another favorite event, the Upstate N.Y. Greyhound Day is Sept 30th. This combined picnic brings many greyhound owners out for a day at Colonie Town Park. It is a real PTA (Paws To Admire). There are so many greyhounds, and of course yours is the most beautiful !

Plus there are the two September awareness clinic days, one at Curtis Lumber and the other at Petsmart in Clifton Park.

A brief advertisement moment: GRONY will again be selling greyhound calendars, if you would like to order your 2008 Greyhound Calendar, just send a reply note. If the calendars are received before the Upstate Greyhound Picnic, you will be able to pick up at the Sept 30th picnic at Colonie Park or for the additional price of postage,
the calendar will be mailed.

See you soon

August 2007

Mix together friends, greyhounds, sunshine and greyt food and it becomes GRONY picnic 2007.

As always our thanks to our cooks, Mike, Kurt and Jim, and special thanks to the members who brought delectable side dishes. Pam and Daryl once again organized and controlled the chaos which is the registration table. Handling entries for the costume contest, door prizes and 50/50. Plus issuing name tags to members with fur kids listed. Jessica and Jason were handling merchandise. Plus have you seen the photographs on the web for the 2007 picnic, well our thanks to Dave and Chris. A greyt suggestion this year by Doreen was to incorporate the members in the judging of the costume contest, so our super thanks to Ora, Gail, and Tim.

There were many hounds this year dunking for biscuits, however Kudos to Sparky, who not only received the Golden Bone for oldest hound attending (14 years), his hide legs may be weak but Sparky blew bubbles in the water as he dunk for biscuits. Plus when the other hounds didn’t want to go dunking, Sparky didn’t want the biscuit to go to waste, and went dunking again. Congratulation to our winners of the costume contest, Renoir Rebbie, Matt Dillon (Chester) and Ms Kitty (Sophie) and Chef (Geronimo) and Oreo (Splurge). Challengers included the Bee and the Flower (Tela and Piper) and the Hulu girl (Tillie). All costumes were fabulous and Judges must have had a difficult time.

Items to bid on at the silent auction were amazing. Our thank you to Katrina ( www.photo.net/photos/Katrina-hiker ), Petsessories (www.petsessories.com ), Little Paws Bakery ( http://www.littlepawstreats.com ) and to Fleeces by Lisa (lisasfleeces@yahoo.com ) and to all our members who created
baskets and handcrafted items.

Each GRONY picnic has its own unique memories. To mention a few which are documented by photo: watching the greyhounds enjoy the cool water of creek; the unexpected moving of the silent auction table; setting up an x-pen and realizing the section didn’t have a door; sitting on the ground to be next to your greyhound (Barb); coming twice to the picnic, once on the correct day. Plus this was the first year Mike didn’t dump water on me, thank you Hayden for keeping Grandpa Mike busy.

Hopefully GRONY created a memory for you too.

June 2007

June has arrived and excitement, as least for myself, is building with regards to the annual picnic. Yes, we are again taking the challenge of bringing greyhounds and their adoptive families together. Just recently I went to one of my nephews (almost) end of school class productions - a little singing, and show and tell; anyways a chuckle came to mind as I thought of the picnic being GRONY’s unique twist on parent/teacher night at school, with a little of end of year production tossed in. Take a moment to look at previous year pictures, many of the same smiles and puffed out chests of pride can be seen with regard to our fur kids as they attempt the dunkin’ for biscuits, or endure dress up contest outfits. So just in case you need a date reminder, it is Sunday, July 22, hope you are able to come this year.

Ever the optimist, even in our changing times; a stranger is only a hello away from being a friend. The other day I received a wonderful surprise visit from a couple who owned a greyhound named Starlight. They had adopted him from GAC out of Delmar some years ago. Starlight has passed recently at age 13, and they were hoping I could use some valued items of Starlight’s for the fosters. I’m glad I was home to answer the doorbell; they were in need of a fur fix lift. Circumstances now are moving them into a senior apartment and out of their home, so the option of another adoption is unavailable. So they sat for a while, told me about Starlight and I introduced them to my Ross, whose track name was Starlight Ross. Small world after all. As quickly as the visit began, they were on their way, and without an address to send a thank you card to, I would like to thank them for the visit and the items to use for the foster greyhounds.

Until next month,

May 2007

Its a shorty this month, slow news month, enjoy!

Hello to good weather again! Mother nature or global warming is definitely keeping all of us confused as to whether we should be in short sleeves or fleece. Let’s hope it is headed towards short sleeves.

GRONY's recent clinic was able to be held outside, which quickly turned into a petting zoo. We never have enough greyhounds to pet; it's a joy to hug, kiss and to pet former fosters when they come to visit. It does save me from doing too many 'drive by's'.

A huge thank you to the Critter Club for letting GRONY give a presentation. Pictures in a magazine were supplemented with four actual greyhounds (Piper, Tela, Ross and Kayla); who were greytful recipients of many hands to pet them.

The students were attentive, asked knowledgeable questions and are an encouragement to this speaker and the other directors (Pam and Daryl) who came to the presentation, that greyhounds, as well as all other pets, have a new generation of champions to continue awareness, and rescue.

A reminder as to an upcoming event to which you can bring your greyhound with you. Old Iron Spring Festival, http://www.oldironspringfestival.org To be held at the Saratoga County Fairgrounds, May 19th and 20th.

Lastly, with the return of good weather, greyhounds and owners are enjoying many walks and hikes on trails. However, please remember, to protect yourself and your greyhounds with regards to ticks (and fleas), which are also returning with the good weather. If you are not using a preventative, be sure to check for unwanted hitchhikers, on your greyhound, and don’t forget those hitchhikers could also be on you.

See you soon at a clinic near you.

============================================================

April 2007

April Fools - I’m still submitting a newsletter. I was briefly tempted to submit an old newsletter, just to see if anyone would email me as to it's previous publishing.

The greyhounds have once again been enjoying running or exploring and sniffing all the uncovered smells, now that the St. Patrick’s weekend snow storm has melted. Once again the backyard with brown grass, soggy and covered with tree limbs and twigs, with sun shining, what a wonderful cure for cabin fever. Sunshine, of course, gets the creative energy and thoughts of coming events. Do you believe it is only four month before the annual GRONY picnic?

Plus invitations to so many wonderful events are available. As the days grow nicer, there will be more invitations to events, we will hopefully incite you to attend one of them. Most recently we received information regarding a Walk for the Animals, at the Crossings in Colonie, this will be held June 9, 2007 and is sponsored by Whiskers. There will be vendors, food and music. I’m fortunate to have greyhounds who are okay with cats and small animals, not all greyhounds are, so please use caution if you do attend this event.

GRONY has received another invitation to speak at the Critter Club. This speaking engagement is always a favorite of mine. To give awareness about ex-racing greyhounds and adoption to the next generation is an opportunity not to be missed.

As for submitting an old newsletter, I just may some day do that, when I run out of things to write about, . . . .

I hope that doesn’t happen.

March 2007

Hello snow ! It is my personal thoughts that those people in Pennsylvania should stop annoying that poor groundhog. Punxsutawney Phil’s revenge/forecast for six more weeks of winter became visual evidence on Valentine’s Day.

Did your greyhounds do the look? You know, the look of ‘ are you kiddin’, I’m not going out there’, I think I can wait a little longer before going. Flash ahead maybe ten minutes and you go to take them out again and due to desperation they hop through and go to the ‘position to eliminate’ and oh my goodness, the surprise of snow actually touching their butts. Truly the second ‘look’ is clearly your fault, allowing snow to get that high. As for me, it was difficult to keep up with the shoveling, not just my drive way, but also the path to my greyhounds favorite spots to eliminate.

With the greyhounds finally inside and snuggled back on their pillows, or the couch, there is time to think of more pleasant weather and all the events available to enjoy with your greyhound. Most recently the chit chat is about Grapehound Wine Tour, July 28 and 29, 2007. Check out further information on their website www.grapehounds.com . So many events available to you and your greyhound, I hope one incites you to experience the camaraderie of the expanding greyhound community.

Until next month.

============================================================

February 2007

Wow how did everyone manage during the recent freezing rain?

The ice storm required me to be creative in finding a way for the greyhounds to get out and get their business done and back without injuries.

The fenced yard was a slippery deck away, and the yard was just an ice rink itself. I opted for throw rugs and beach towels for the initial path across the deck, and cat litter sprinkled it the yard, although I tried not to laugh at my greyhounds predicament of legs sliding, I found I was laughing at myself also because caring for their predicament I began trying to hold their legs from sliding, as I tried not to fall from sliding. So glad the neighbor did not have a video camera, I’m sure he would have submitted it to America’s Funniest Videos and may have been in the top three.

Then there is the frozen poopsicles. I should just invite my friend over that is a golfer, they could practice their swing or sliding out of the snow pit. I gave one of the poopsicles a whack and I'm sure a bird at the feeder didn't know what hit him. Frozen poopsicles are definitely a projectile device equal to a rock. Sad as I was to hit the bird, I'm glad it wasn't my window or car. Can you imagine explaining that dent to the insurance company. Guess it would be safer to just wait until spring to clean up the yard.

Changing the subject, another event has been listed to our schedule. GRONY has been invited to participate at the Old Iron Spring Festival, www.oldironspringfestival.org held at the Saratoga Fairgrounds, May 19 and 20th. Check their website for entertainers who will be performing. There is a plus; being able to bring your music loving greyhound with you.

Brrrrr weather is finally here, time to bundle up and try not to hibernate, we may not all be able to walk around the neighborhood with the fur kids, but we can take them for a ride, it could be around the block or to the bank drive through ATM, greyhounds are happy just to hear the sound of the leash being hooked on their collar and going out with you, be it in the car for a ride, or to the mailbox.

January 2007

Happy New Year !

A huge thank you to our volunteers who were Santa for pet pictures: Larry, Kurt, Cliff and Jim. With the good weather and dry roads, many pets came to sit on, stand on, lick Santa’s face and pull on Santa’s beard and have their pictures taken with him too. This photographer elf is very grateful and gives many thanks to Santa’s, super patience elves that performed magic in getting each pet to look at the camera: Jason, Pam, Daryl, Mike and Jim. Lastly thank you to the elves, Doreen and Jessica, handling two and three sets of photos, customers and pets, creating envelope packages to be scanned, and not getting any paper cuts on their tongues.

Hope everyone received all the gifts during Chanukah and Christmas that they wanted, and some nice surprise gifts too. Not sure if it is a bonus for me, however is has been almost a whole week since unwrapping gifts and some of the fur kids’ stuffies still have a squeaky noise maker inside.

Awareness clinics will begin again this month. Although everyone has been busy, i.e. pictures and holidays, it is always an exciting time starting a new year of activities. Each director looks forward to reconnecting with members, we take on the challenge creating some new events which you, our members, will enjoy trying. The GRONY annual picnic is a must, the day may be busy, but for a few moments, GRONY members re-unite together as one extended family.

One last notation: I received an email from a member who found a tick on one of their greyhounds. With the extended dry and warm temperature our region has been experiencing, remember to protect your fur kid, continue to use the Frontline, Advantrix or Advantage until the ground is completely frozen.

============================================================

November 2006

Autumn’s chill has erased any memory of summer’s humid hot breezes, and sadly all the colorful leaves have fallen off the trees. However, it is filled with laugher as I scrape poop off the bottom of my sneaker(s). I always anticipate it not happening, and I take care to mulch and rake, but it always happens at least once. Moreover, I should have remembered all the locations of favorite greyhound elimination areas. Oh well, but while I am on the topic of autumn, how about the time change, have you notice any change in your greyhound. It is difficult enough for me to get in the groove of it however the poor greyhounds are confused as to why their dinner bowls are not jingling with the wonderful sound of kibble, and its our fault it is an hour later than their stomachs think it should be.

Can you believe Thanksgiving is just a few weeks away. The smells which even the most perfect greyhound cannot ignore. It may have been a lure which incited them on the track, however now it may be your dinner plate. Last year after the holidays I heard a wonderful story regarding a ham dinner. The couple were expecting to have leftovers but their greyhound had another thought. Greyhound and couple are all doing well and this year, they will need a bigger ham, because they adopted a second greyhound (i.e. only teasing about the bigger ham).

Lastly I want to remind you: December and Santa pictures will be coming up soon, we need volunteers to be Santa, and helpers too. It is always a fun time, whether we are busy or super busy, there is laughter and camaraderie. So email me or the webmaster if you would like to volunteer.

Until next year, keep your greyhound safe and yourself healthy.

Merry Christmas and Happy Chanukah to our members.

============================================================

September 2006

The combined Upstate New York Greyhound Day, September 17th Sunday, will again be held at Colonie Park. GRONY will be cooking again, and we anticipate expanding the menu with a few new items. With regards to a complete listing of speakers and activities to be held during the day; as soon as items are finalized, a separate email will be sent. A brief description of information will also be posted on the web, if received in time for the webmaster to do so.

Have you thought about ordering your GRONY 2007 calendar yet? Nancy H. with her greyhounds Future, Kia, Bones and Pearl are in this year’s wall calendar. Last year Nancy brought her fur kids for a Santa Picture and the boys have green jingle collars on and the girls have red, and I’ll let you try and guess who the Santa is. Nancy submitted the photo, and was selected. I’m so excited to know that a member’s fur kids (and one of our Santas) are featured in the Celebrating Greyhound calendar. Congratulations Nancy!

This month there was a celebration picnic for Kiddo’s safe return. A mixture of strangers, and friends who were united in the search for Kiddo, now were one collective unit and family. As we all chatted and petted the fur kids, one of the fur kids was Frankie, a rather large black/white patch, on his seventh home, with a huge scar on his side from a near fatal incident. It became a ‘small grey-world’ when I mentioned a near fatal incident with regards to one of my former fosters, a greyhound named Bryson. A smile of happiness and joy for me to learn that these two greyhounds with the odds stacked against them are now playmates and live on the same street.

One additional event some might be interested in. St. Francis of Assisi Blessing of the Animals has been scheduled at St. John’s Lutheran Church. The date is October 7th, it is a Saturday. It will be held in the courtyard on Central Avenue.

Hope that one of these events you can bring your greyhound to.and visit.

See you soon.

August 2006

Here it is...

Six months in the planning, four hours of scheduled events and free time, and a collection of new memories. Thank you all who attended, I hope you had fun, I know I did. For those of our members who were not able to attend, remember to check the website for the new GRONY 2006 picnic pictures,
which will be posted as soon as the webmaster is able.

Little Paws Bakery ( http://www.littlepawstreats.com ) got the crowd in the mood with the dressing game. The events continued with the awarding of ten Golden Bones, pulling tickets during the day for door prizes and a few brave hounds who went dunking for a biscuit. The costume contest had the Phantom of the Opera (Rebbie) and the Old fisherman (Geronimo) with an oh so cute fish (Iggy sidekick, Splurge) working the audience for applause. Completing the day was the silent auction, where is always a few surprises, thinking you were the last bidder and then with jaws dropping, realizing you were not.

There is always a wonderful mix of picnic attendees, hounds and people. There is always laugher, and the exchange of hound related anecdotes. Talking with one of our newer members, they were telling me how they were reading the Sunday newspaper before coming to the picnic, and their greyhound came up to them and tail wagging and being anty, they asked if he needed to go outside, of course that’s a familiar ‘good’ word and as they got up from the couch to let him outside - yup, Airbud didn’t need to go outside, he wanted them off, so he could snuggle up on the couch! I think this has happened to all of us at some time, if it hasn’t, it will.

A wonderful moment for me at the this year's picnic was seeing Kiddo come, safe and happy. The week before many greyhound owners and volunteers were on a rescue search for him, there were moments of fear as we saw him cross a major highway, and as darkness came, relenting sadly to wait until daylight before beginning the search again. Another special moment and joy was seeing Charlie Bear, and his dedicated family who nursed him back to health. Briefly consolidated, last August Charlie was in a chronic phrase of Erchiosis. This tick born infection, lodged in his bone marrow, is very difficult to treat. Less than half his normal weight, recovery was questionable. Well recover he did!

Thank you to Katrina ( www.photo.net/photos/Katrina-hiker ), Petsessories (www.petsessories.com ), and to our members who donated items for the auction. Thank you to our cooks, and to all the volunteers who make this year’s picnic the best yet. A huge shout-out thanks to Jason from me, he was my time keeper of events, and as I try to visit, eat, check on my hounds and have some picnic fun too, I needed a timekeeper.

Don't forget to reserve your 2007 calendar now. All you need to do is send an email to greyhoundrescueofny.com and let us know whether you would like a wall or a desk calendar and how many of each you want to reserve.
Pricing will be determined soon.

Thanks again for the new memories.

July 2006

Hello everyone. Have you been enjoying all the moisture we been having?

Seems there has been both; plenty of rain and hot sticky weather this past month. Even though it is hot and humid the greyhounds still come outside with me while I'm doing yard work, however, no amount of shade or water can replace their absolute favorite, the huge fan in front of the air conditioner, spreading coolest over them curled up on their pillows.

Then there are the thunder storms which can be difficult for some greyhounds. Last month while baby-sitting for a few hounds, I experienced a few different reactions to storms than I had been used to with my own greyhound. One greyhound's solution was to bark each time the thunder rolled. Perhaps to scare the thunder, or maybe she thought by doing so, she was protecting the other hounds; one who was hiding in the bathroom, or another who was shaking and panting, and the third just pacing, looking for a familiar safe space, or just because pacing kept him busy. A few busy moments, reassuring each who were frighten, and talking softly to them and as quickly as it begins, the storm is finally over. As I have said several times, it's one of those greyhound quirks that we get to encounter seasonally.

Hope to see as many as can attend the annual picnic. There will be a registration desk, where you will receive a free ticket for a door prize, a label to identify your greyhound's (s’) name (s), and your first names. That helps the new members get to know everyone; oh alright, it is really to aid us seniors to remember quicker. Schedule for activities will be posted, so that everyone can enjoy the dog run, or for those who have water greyhounds, the nearby creek. This year we will have a sign up sheet for the costume contest which will ensure that everyone is dressed and in attendance before judging.

That all for this month . . . looking forward to hearing lots of greyhound stories and just reminisce, talk and of course, give hugs to the former foster greyhounds.

============================================================

June 2006

Oh my gosh, can you believe it is June. Having the windows open and enjoying the breeze. Plus the entertainment of your greyhounds as they get waffle noses from the screens as they look out the window because they hear a squirrel. Or my absolute personal non-favorite, the greyhound who eats those ‘helicopters’ seed things from the maple tree. As we all have come accustom to do, because we are greyhound people, we look at poop.

If it looks a different color or something is in it, well, it cause for concern.

Needless to say, I’m glad most of those seeds are finished falling off the tree and have been raked up.

Recently I was driving up north on I 81, just being one of the many travelers that particular day. Unlike being around home, familiar roads; seeing familiar places as well as vehicles or neighbors, briefly I felt lonely among all those other vehicles on the road. However, in a wonderful instant knew I was totally connected and part of a growing community as a van with greyhound stickers and decals drove pass. I think it was a Quebec license plate. I was thrilled and hoped they felt a kinship with me also as they saw my greyhound decals. Although I was hoping as I stopped at the rest area to exchange greyhound rescue names, Quebec was not there however the stop did afforded me the opportunity to pet some fur kids and chat with their owners. Refreshed and feeling less lonely because of the connection to other animals lovers.

Hope you too get to travel a different route and feel a connection, and if you have the chance, stop and exchange a brief hello. As for Quebec license plate people, I’m sorry we didn’t get a chance to meet, but perhaps in the future we will travel the same road again.

Never feel lonely, look around at all the similarities we share with others; it is a small world if you take time to say hello.

Until next month.

May 2006

Hope everyone has enjoyed their holidays last month, be that Passover or Easter, and that they were shared with family, friends and filled with laughter.

Just to highlight some of last months events for those who were not able to join in. A report from one of our Directors, who attended The All For Pets at Empire State Plaza, indicated it was crowded. Lots of vendors, and one of which, Little Paws Bakery, will be attending the GRONY picnic. The March of Dimes Walk at Saratoga Spa Park, as always, was very well attended. This year there was a Kid Zone, with face painting and for the four legged fur kids, there were biscuits and bowls of water. PJ Barbeque of Route 9 Saratoga did the cooking for the walkers and volunteers. Sadly I did not get the name of the DJ’s who did the music. It was a beautiful day for walking. Another plus this month, thanks to an invitation from Barbara (Berta) I had the great opportunity to give a brief talk to the Queensbury Kiwanis Club.

Do you know it is only two and half months before the GRONY annual picnic? Just in case you have not looked at the events listing, the picnic date is Sunday, July 23. It will be held at Kelly Park, Ballston Spa. We have gotten some suggestions for improvements to scheduling contests, and to make it easier for newbie/rookies members to meet and remember other greyhounds and owners, a label/ID tags. Thanks Laura (Tillie). Also, suggestions for the golden bone awards are being reviewed, sorry not all will be able to be used.

Jeffy is up on his legs and I hear the jiggling of his collar tags; it is not the call of the wild but definitely a sound which gets my attention.

Until next month.

============================================================

April 2006

Spring is definitely a favorite time of year, and for the greyhounds owners it is the season of ‘window nose smudges’, just what are those hounds looking at, or are they trying to smell through the glass. Last year there was muddy paw print art but so far this year has only been dirt paw prints, much easier to vacuum up.

I’m not sure about your greyhounds, however mine have had enough inside time, as evidenced by much playful running as they get outside. If you are fortunate to have a fenced yard, the greyhounds will eventually become supervisors (after they get tired from their playful running) and enjoy watching, from a sunny spot, as the lawn is raked and cleaned. However, the greyhounds are very generous and if you take a break from raking and cleaning, they will let you take them for a walk.

There are a few reminders for this month. One is the March of Dimes walk on April 30. If you and your greyhound would like to walk, come and sign up that day, or you can sponsor Doreen and Mike, who will be walking with their greyhounds. There is another function that is not listed on the events page however you may enjoy attending it. All About Pets being held on the Empire State Plaza, South Concourse, April 21 and 22, here is the website for further information www.allaboutpetsfair.com

One more item to remind you about, Heart Worm Testing and if negative then monthly prevention medication, also flea and tick season is upon us, so time to start protective measures for your greyhound.

Until next month,

============================================================

March 2006

Hope everyone enjoyed that winter thaw. It took but a few hours on a Friday afternoon to change thoughts of getting out my rake to leaving the snow shovel on the porch.

Telephone calls were made to check up on how some members and greyhounds that endured the worse of the wind storm. Some were able to use their wood stoves, others would wear their outside coats inside and one greyhound I hear went to work with their owner. Necessary is the seed of invention, and our members blossomed with their inventive ways on how to care for their greyhounds during the recent emergency.

Also, contents of the newsletter each month has become more then just my chatter, but a collective incorporation of pieces of conversations and emails. Each time I get to share a few moments with a member who has ‘newbie enthusiasm’, I’m encouraged and given an opportunity to renew my enthusiasm also.

With that written, here’s hoping that you, our members, will continue to share an ideal, or a story and enjoy a moment of veiled internet fame.

During the winter months it is always an unexpected gift to greyhound owners to have mild temperatures. The opportunity to take a walk, or for one couple, the surprise of seeing just how amazingly fast their couch potato fur kids can be in an enclosed fenced area, and for others it is being able to get a head start on cleaning up poopicles. Go figure

For me, the first clinics of the year are always exciting; anticipating talking to potentially new greyhound owners to be, answering questions, and the hope for the foster greyhounds to be adopted. I was totally energized by our members that came to visit. Although crowded at times, our members helped by answering questions regarding their greyhounds, plus were careful to keep the aisles clear for store patrons to get by, and before leaving the store became buying patrons themselves.

February is the month of valentines, and the board members would like to say thank you. Thank you for sharing your stories and pictures in emails; for letting us share in your joy and sorrow. You, our members and your greyhounds make GRONY a stronger organization in so many ways.

That's all for this month's chatter, so while you are able to do so, enjoy this brief winter thaw.

============================================================

January 2006

Happy New Year and the board of directors hope everyone enjoyed their holidays. There was no newsletter for December, the editorial staff took the month off

Our thanks to everyone who came to pictures with Santa however our biggest thanks to our volunteer Santas: Rick, Kurt, Mike, Larry and Jim. The rookie Santa Larry had the most pets on his lap or in his arms for one day of pictures, however Santa Jim may have topped that because he had a lizard on his arm for a picture. With the color of light beige the lizard was blending into the beard and gloves, so placing on the red sleeve was the only location that the lizard would show up.

Awareness clinics are being set up and scheduled. We will keep you informed of dates with regards to special events that we hope you may want to attend or join in with us to do, as well as listing them on our events page of the website.

Finally, the snow and cold has arrived. As mentioned in a previous newsletter, we have four seasons up here in the Northeast, each with their own special beauty and greyhound related quirk. Now depending on the number of greyhounds you own the issue (quirk) now is: how many poopicles do you have decorating your snow covered yard? The best part of a fence yard is during the winter, just open the door and stand and watch the fur kids, and be there to open the door as they run back in after doing their business. However, just remember to try and do pick up duty after the hounds before those brown piles on the snow freeze and become poopicles.

That all for this newsletter.

============================================================

November 2005

Ahhh autumn, the time of year I end up stepping in poop more than any other time.
All the bright beautiful trees are now losing their leaves, and greyhounds love that it hides and blends the color of poop. Really, when it snows you can see it and during spring and summer it is more visible, but not with autumn tri-color leaves, so greyhounds keep us active in each season of the year, now it is rake leaves up or scrap off the bottom of your shoe.

I’m been grateful for the extended nice walking weather, as have my greyhounds. It is a plus after the wet month of October. Even Dewey Beach was wet part of time, however this did not stop the fun. Jeffy (whose picture is on the front page of the website) enjoyed walking to the beach, he just needed the ride back occasionally.

Remember there is only two awareness clinic this month. Clinics will resume in January. Santa pictures are during the first three weekends in December. I’ll send a separate flyer listing dates and times, or you can check the website. For those of our members out of state or too far for winter travel, I’m sure there may be a Petsmart closer to you, should you want to have your greyhound’s picture taken.

One other quick note; Thanksgiving is about three weeks away, and for those of you who adopted your greyhound this year, greyhounds may be sight hounds, however the smells of thanksgiving are even more inciting than hamburgers on the grill.

Until Next Flyer....

October 2005

A huge Thank You to all of those members who came to the Colonie Park Picnic. I hope you enjoyed it. GRONY directors were very busy serving up lunch specials, and I tried to limit my own intake of nachos and cheese. In between we were able to visit, say hello to some new friends who came over from Massachusetts, and get to visit with some friends and co-volunteers with the other rescue groups. Congratulations to those members whose names were pulled in the raffle.

Also, a huge, Super Thank You to Larry, (he and Merilyn adopted Elmo, with the stubby tail). Larry has volunteered to be Santa for one of the Petsmart picture days. There is still time for you to volunteer for one of the few remaining days available.

Recently as I drove along the Massachusetts Pike I was surrounded with the beauty of the Berkshires, but oh no, there over on the hillside was a splash of red, maybe a yellow and definitely some orange. I was thinking what a weird color to paint your house. Okay so I really knew it was the leaves changing. So why do I bring this up, just to remind you that it is time to prepare for cooler temperatures for your greyhounds. They may not need the heavy coat on, but unless you have a heated floor, they may need an extra comforter to snuggle into or over them during the evening.

Time to close for another month, I’ve got greyhound stickers to create and print, just in case we have someone stop by at the Kidderfest, Albany Jewish Community Center, coming up at the end of the month

If you are reading this early on October 1st, there will be a blessing of the animals in the courtyard of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Central Avenue, Albany, NY at 11:00 am. This is open to all pets, not just greyhounds.

============================================================

September 2005

What a great summer. I hope everyone has been resting because now that summer is coming to a close, our busy schedule is beginning, so here are some dates to mark on your greyhound calendars. What, no greyhound calendar? Okay, this is your lucky day, so that this does not occur in the future, just EMail [ greyhoundrescueofny.com ] and place your order now with GRONY for 2006 greyhound calendars

(Specify Wall @ $10.00 each and/or Desk @ $12.00 each and quantity of each.)

GRONY will respond to all orders, to verify receipt of your order and quantities.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Okay back to some calendar dates to remember. The first will be September 25. That is the Upstate New York Greyhound Day at Colonie Park. This is the combined greyhound groups in the area. As soon as the itinerary is available, we will EMail it to you, listing the speakers and events scheduled. Bring and show off your greyhound. If the hounds don't want to leave the pillow, there will be other hounds available to pet.

October 23rd is the Albany Jewish Community Center Children's Wellness Day.
There are many things of interest for you and the skin kids to do.
Please, NO personal greyhounds.
Stop by at our table and say hi.

November we will be doing just our regular awareness clinics and then
December will be Santa Paw Pictures. Dates are being scheduled for Saratoga Petsmart, Niskayuna Petsmart and hopefully we are trying for one day at Latham Petsmart.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ever thought about dressing as Santa and having your lap used by various pets for pictures??? Old/Young, Small/Big, Female/Male, you can do this. It is fun, for a good cause plus the added benefit of retelling friends and family all the fun you had dressing up as Santa and volunteering your time. EMail [ greyhoundrescueofny.com ]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Candid phone calls will again be started in September, I took the summer off.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also, something to get you thinking, we would like to spotlight and have your greyhound's picture posted on the website, the ‘hook’ is, we would like you to submit by EMail
[ greyhoundrescueofny.com ] a brief story regarding how they became part of your family, or was there a funny episode which occurred. Maybe it was that first sandwich that went missing, or maybe Easter candy that was hidden but found by a sight hound with a sweet tooth. I know the possibilities are endless with greyhounds.

Include a photo for your story if you would like it posted with the story.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That's enough until next month.

============================================================

August 2005

Have you checked the website lately? The picnic pictures are already posted.

We had just about perfect weather, there were moments as we were setting up the picnic area that I thought we would need to use the extra plastic sheeting we had brought with us. With a little overcast of clouds the members and greyhounds came and the fun began.

A huge thank you to all our volunteers, plus a special thank you to all our members and greyhounds who participated in the games. Kudos to those special greyhounds who were recipients of golden bone awards.

We have been receiving suggestions for 2006 Golden Bones, as well as suggestions for new games and improvements to our picnic functions.

============================================================

July 2005

Are you having fun yet? If not, I hope in about two weeks you will be. GRONY is receiving some Emma's regarding attendance and have also received confirmations in the mail for those coming to the picnic. I'm almost to the panic stage, especially listening to the local weatherman and hearing the tri-city area broke a record for continuous 90 or over degree weather. There is a little over two weeks before the picnic, maybe we can keep the sunshine and crank down the humid level by then. Otherwise we all will be taking a dip in the nearby creek to stay cool.

As for updates from some members, I received an EMail regarding a greyhound having 14 teeth being pulled, hey Geronimo, did you remember to put them under your pillow for the tooth fairy? That's a lot of doggy biscuits coming your way, oh no you may not be able to chew them now. Also, as promised, a picture of Ivy and sidekick Moonshine. Pardon the blurry picture, I'm still getting use to my digital camera.
Ivy & Moonshine Picture

Lots of activity in adoptions. We welcome some new members, Mike and Laura with the adoption of Tillie and Pam and Daryl were very quickly charmed by Devies (now known as Piper) and because their application was already approved, her adoption was less than a week after meeting her. Birdman was also adopted by long time GRONY member, Steve and Ora. Congrats to all.

Hope we see you at the picnic or you will have the opportunity to view the pictures and read about the fun in next month's newsletter.

============================================================

June 2005

Yikes ! Can you believe that it is June ! So much has been happening that I think I forgot to enjoy May. However, here are a few updates on May's activities for you.
First, a huge THANK YOU to Jennifer for the beautiful coats given to GRONY for the foster hounds. If this is your first newsletter, Jennifer is the Girl Scout who was working towards a Silver Award by making coats and leading others in the making of coats. For a full review see the February 2005 newsletter. Jennifer's coat project was accepted by the Council and she has received her Silver Award. See pictures of the presentation of coats at Curtis Lumber at the May 14th clinic.
(Click on thumb-nails below to see enlarged Pictures)

During May GRONY also had the opportunity to make a presentation to the Kritter Club. There was a large group of students, parents and teachers and we took over a cafeteria to accommodate all that attended. With the opportunity to speak with younger adults, I enjoyed talking about and answering questions regarding greyhounds. In addition, a small packet of educational material in the form of mazes, crossword puzzle and a word search game gave the members of the Kritter Club something to bring home after the presentation. Several members of the Kritter Club helped me with watching the two greyhounds I brought with me. The few pictures I was able to take are of the Kritter Club entertaining the hounds, or it is vise versa? Plus I was able to capture a few Kritter Club members reading and doing the educational material that was given to them.
(Click on thumb-nails below to see enlarged Pictures)

Some candid phone calls and a few follow up calls were made during May. One special follow up call was to Edith with regards to one of her greyhounds, Ivy, who is now a tripod. It was a difficult decision to make and even more difficult time, but Ivy's chemo is all done and she is doing well. Prognosis for the future is good and I hope to visit them and get a picture of Ivy running with her long time sidekick Moonshine. That will give you something to check back next month and see if there's a picture. Some phone calls were in regards to EMail addresses which came back undeliverable, so please remember to send GRONY your new address if your ISP changes.

Time to end this month's newsletter and get to work on the flyer and the Golden Bone Awards for the GRONY 2005 Picnic, which is only six weeks away.

============================================================

May 2005

Green grass and budding trees have ushered in May. There have been a few cool-ish mornings, however I hope all the greyhounds are enjoying an evening walk, unless it is raining, because after all they are made of sugar and believe they will melt even to run and go to the bathroom outside in the fenced yard.

GRONY has new arrivals, the best of which were 5 new greyhounds, 3 females and 2 males. Now before you go and look at the website to view their pictures, the other arrival is new merchandise that is available, so look for the red color block labeled merchandise to click on. Magnetic ribbons in two sizes, plus other merchandise is available at clinics.

GRONY also extends an invitation to our members to join us for a walk in the Scotia Memorial Parade, May 25th, beginning at 6 pm. Further information regarding where to meet is being verified. The sewing machine has been humming to enable an assortment of appropriate attire be available so that each greyhound walking will be able to show their patriotism, and to give thanks and honor to all veterans.

Greyhound Race Track Closing. Have you every thought about fostering? GRONY tries to keep our members informed of events, news and other information. The track closing is a mix blessing, the joy is no more greyhounds racing there; and the terrifying side is the huge influx of greyhounds all at once. So, applicants to foster can apply at anytime. GRONY directors are available for personal instruction into a very rewarding, although not easy, occupation. See the note below regarding this solicitation.

A call was placed to the Plainfield track and spoke with the adoption coordinator. She gave me a general idea of what happened. The closing took everyone by surprise. They knew the place was being sold, but thought they could continue racing. Suddenly the developer said no more live racing. Its supposed to become a domed NASCAR track in the future. The kennel operators and help are all out of jobs. AND, they are the ones that need to feed the dogs. She said she is sure the NGA will step in to make sure the dogs are taken care of. She said there are about 900 dogs involved plus the 180 or 200 she already has in her adoption kennel ready to go. She was very appreciative of the call. She said she hopes all the groups will try to help. There are end of the line greys there, as well as beginning young dogs just starting. Racing will cease the middle of May. I asked her if the kennels have started to cull the dogs to decide who goes to other tracks and who is retired. She said she didn't know. Right now the kennels are contacting the owners to find out what to do.

April 2005

Ahhh April, isn’t it wonderful with the brown ground and muddy water puddles for the greyhounds to walk in? Paw print art on the floor is all the rage now. April, the fourth month of the year is here already; is the rotation of the earth speeding up? I know there are still 24 hours in the day, but there doesn’t seem to be enough time to get everything done, maybe I’ll just have to give up the newsletter - ha ha April fools, I wouldn’t do that I like an audience for my ramblings.

Greyhound Rescue has received invitations to participate in some familiar events, join us if you have the time, or stop by and visit. Later this month will be the March of Dimes walk at Saratoga Spa, and in May, the Memorial Day Parade in Scotia. Events will be listed and also a brief note will be sent to those emails we have, when dates get near. Our continued thanks to everyone who stops by at the events. Also, The Kritter’s Club in Clifton Park again has invited Greyhound Rescue to speak to them during their May meeting, this is an after school club which teaches and involves students/members with regards to all pets. These are just a few of the upcoming activities to enable GRONY to spread the awareness regarding how greyhounds are adoptable and loving.

Candid phone calls: yes, they continue, so the only way to avoid one is to change your phone number, or have it unlisted, but then I may just come to your home and have a candid home visit. Anyway, I received a call back message from one member, I had left a message to indicate who I was and why I was calling and she was thrilled to let me know that their greyhound, Fireball, who is 13 years young, was wintering in Florida but would be back North soon and may grace GRONY with his presence at the annual picnic this year. He may be in contention for the Golden Bone Award for oldest greyhound attending.

Enough rambling I guess for this month, time to get the leashes for the greyhounds and take a walk. Until next month.

============================================================

March 2005

Wow, last month went by fast, I was hoping to have the newsletter done before the month started, but once again I'm a few days short of that deadline.

The date for the picnic has been set, July 17, 2005. It is a Sunday.
We will once again invade Kelly Park in Ballston Spa. More details in a few months but circle the date on your calendars and remember you still have time to submit your suggestions for a "Golden Bone Award".

The Girl Scout presentation went well, and the two greyhounds that went with me still have some fur left after all the petting they received from the Juniors and Cadettes that were there to help with creating the greyhound coats for fosters. Jennifer is doing all the finishing work. - - (Click on thumb-nails below to see enlarged Pictures)

Candid phone update: I continue to make and enjoy chatting with members on my quest to try and speak with each of you. Sadly there are a few numbers which are no longer correct. On one recent call there was a funny greyhound story to which we all relate: it occurred over the holidays, Dave and Sandy went over to a relatives house for a few hours in the evening, and it seems the fur kid girls really wanted to go with them too and were not happy about being left at home, so Dave and Sandy believe it was Callie who located a bag of flour, and Carly was the one who dragged it in every room that did not have a door shut. I'm sure it was just Callie and Carly's way of bringing a snow like look to the festive holidays (remember, December there was no snow).

============================================================

February 2005

Thank goodness for the February thaw, or at least for a few days of above freezing weather. I know winter is not over but hope everyone got to enjoy the recent sun and warmer temperatures, I was able to shred a few layers of fleece.

I have begun the candid phone calling, and delighted to hear and report that the greyhounds are doing well, and also giving the correct website address to the members to look at for updates and news. It will take a while and I'm not going in alphabetic order, but I hope to speak with each member.

February, the month of Valentines, love and giving has GRONY being invited to a Girl Scout meeting to give an awareness presentation regarding greyhound rescue. Jennifer will then lead in the sewing of coats for greyhound fosters. Showing leadership and working towards a Silver Award, which is the highest award a Cadette Girl Scout can earn. Jennifer is from Troop 481 of the Hudson Valley Girl Scout Council and making coats for rescued greyhound fosters is her project. Further details about this, and perhaps a picture or two, will be in next month's newsletter.

HAPPY 2005

Santa pet pictures was a success with the help of our favorite volunteer Santas Jim, Kurt, Mike.   GRONY is very thankful to each of you for once again working your magic, plus and including holding on to all the wiggly fur kids who came to have pictures taken.  Another thank you goes to Santa's elves, Doreen, Bonnie and Paula, who didn't have to hold on to wiggly fur kids, however, they were very supportive and helpful to Santa.

T'is the beginning of another year,  and visions and hopes for many rescues and adoptions are at the top of our list to do.   New awareness clinics for the first four months are set, and plans for the annual picnic will soon be underway.

We look forward to meeting and talking to new people about ex-racing greyhounds.  Answering questions and getting the awareness about our gentle giants known.   However, our members are important to us, and there are some who we have not heard from in a while, some members who adopted previously do not know we have a website.  Although this is not a New Year's resolution, . . .it is more like a candid phone promise,. . . someday, sometime when you least expect it (evening hours that is) your phone will ring, and it will be GRONY taking a moment to say hello.

May the year bring laugher, health and happiness and dreams come true.

============================================================
November 2004

Did we have an Indian summer and I missed it? Laugh if you want, but my greyhounds and I have gotten out the fleece!

Each season has it own charm, and really I'm enjoying the beauty of Fall as it transforms the leaves into an array of color, however, the cozy fleece just helps to keep the slight chill in the air more , just a little less chilly.

Time once again for door bells to ring and the shouts of Trick or Treat.
Greyhound Rescue would like to remind you that chocolate is toxic to dogs. Chocolate contains theobromine, a stimulant related to caffeine, which is toxic to dogs.

Carob and yogurt treats are a nice substitution, which your pet will enjoy and that are not toxic to them. Both are available at Country Acres on Route 50, Burnt Hills and at all Petsmart locations.

HO HO HO, Santa Claus Pet Pictures

As in the past, Petsmart will again be the place that your pet will be able to sit on Santa's lap and have not just one picture, but two pictures taken. Santa's elves have been busy creating a variety of hats, and other accessories. These will be available for you to use, if you choose.

July 2004

Thank you everyone for a wonderful day of fun, chatter and laughter.
Thank you to everyone who stopped to visit, especially the Times Union
photographer and the Ballston Journal representative.    From near and far,
greyhound owners, and greyhounds came together for GRONY picnic 2004.

We would like to thank our grill cooks, Mike and Jim, and to
everyone who brought salads, and goodies, our palates had a work-out trying
to enjoy a little of everything.  Special paw paw thank you from the
greyhounds for their treats also.

As with all outdoor events, we are at the mercy of Mother nature, so as we
were setting up the x-pens in the morning, there was a light rain shower,
but for the amount of time it lasted, it may have been Mike with a
super soaker gun, because the rest of the picnic was sunny, dry and warm.

There was competition in the dog costume contest. However, Champayne
won first place for the third straight year; owned by Joe and MaryEllen,
going with a Saratoga Harness look. The trotter Champayne pulling a
sulky, with the driver being a rabbit with a whip.
The silks were red, white and blue.

Second place Eli dressed as a Greyt Doctor, surgical scrubs, mask and hair
bonnet, owner Krystal.  Runner ups: there was a Pajama Girl,
very retro 60's & 70's Carly, owned by Dave and Sandy.

Wonder Woman, Berta, owned by Barbara,

A Long Hot Dog, Moe, owned by Joe and Katie.

A Christmas Tree, Geronimo, owned by Bernadette.

We missed those who were not able to come but hope you enjoy the pictures on
our website www.greyhoundrescueofny.com. In the Gallery Section.
