The story of Piper McGee
In February, 2005, Daryl and I had to make the most difficult decision of our life...to send our beloved lab/shepherd mix, Alex, to the Rainbow Bridge. We all knew that it was time but she had been with us for 15 years and letting go was gut-wrenching.
Afterwards I wasn’t sure if I would ever be able to love another dog the way that I had loved Alex, so we were fur-childless for a while. But the house was so quiet. So after a couple of months we began to talk about adopting a new family member. The list of requirements became quite long and I began to wonder if we would ever find a dog that could fill such a tall order.
Then one fateful night we went to visit friends who had a Greyhound named Lady. After that night, I felt that we might be a good family to rescue a Greyhound. After much careful consideration and some research, we applied to adopt with GRONY. Shortly afterwards, a new group of adoptees arrived from the track and among them was a small, red fawn female named Devie’s Capistrano. The minute I saw her I knew that she was the one for us. Something in her eyes touched my soul.
On Thursday, June 16, 2005, Devie’s Capistrano came to live in her forever
home with us. We changed her name to Piper McGee. Over the past few months
she has really come out of her shell. She is a constant source of joy and
laughter in our home and it is almost certainly one of the most spoiled
creatures on the planet. She has filled the hole in my heart in the shape
of a dog that was created when Alex went to the Rainbow Bridge. People
will sometimes comment on how nice it was for us to rescue Piper. We feel
that it has been a mutually beneficial arrangement.
She has given as much to us as we have to her.
