INFORMATION ABOUT FOSTERING A GREYHOUND

( greyhound rescue new york )
Pup In Chair...........Kathy
Greyhound Rescue of New York also known as GRONY is looking for foster homes within a 20-25 mile radius of Clifton Park, New York 12065.

If you are unable to meet the below requirements and still wish to assist us with the greyhounds come to a Meet & Greet Event and get to know us and the greyhounds and / or consider a donation of needed items or financial support for the greyhounds.
Households with children under 5 is not recommended as a foster home.
You must have previous experience with greyhounds.
The foster must be able to attend all meet & greets (events) that GRONY is scheduled for. This is where the fosters get seen and meet potential adopters.
Corrective action for the greyhound is limited to a loud NO when caught in the act and rarely the tap of your hand (not a slap) on the upper thigh with a loud NO.
Care of the greyhound, such as, Food, Treats, Medications (if required) and Veterinary care will be provided by GRONY.
The greyhound will be coming from the track to your home where you will provide care and training until the foster is adopted.
Initially you will keep the greyhound in a crate when you can not watch them to see what they may try to get into until you feel they can be given more freedom, a little at a time. Greyhounds generally like their crates as it is a sense of security to them so when not in the crate leave the door open for them to use if they want.
A few greyhounds will chew (not all) on wood, remotes, computer cables, electrical cords so it is YOUR responsibility to train and keep them safe.
The greyhound has never lived outside of the track / training environment and needs to learn about almost everything that we take for granted such as, but not limited to the following:

Windows -
They can not walk or run thru them.

Mirrors -
There is not another real greyhound looking at them.

Your Home -
Will become what their crate was at the track.

Stairs -
Greyhounds will need to learn how to climb and go down stairs.

House Training -
What is allowed and what is not. We do not allow fosters on the bed or furniture because the future adopter may not allow this.

Other Dogs and Small Animals -
A greyhound may have never seen another breed of dog, squirrel, cat, etc.

Cars, Trucks, Road Noise - When walking greyhounds can become spooked by road noise especially when a vehicle comes from behind, when they can not see it coming.

When Spooked - Greyhounds may attempt to get out of their collar and you need to know how to react so that we do not have a greyhound running loose.

And more....Greyhounds are intelligent and inventive.
Many of the greyhounds reactions to new experiences are comical to us but can be scary to them.
GRONY - Will not be responsible for (but not limited to the following) damage or injury to people, pets or personal items caused by the foster greyhound.
If you are interested in fostering and you have questions or need more information, please attend a Meet & Greet or contact us at webmaster@greyhoundrescueofny.com.
